Santorum feels the need to say "Hey Puerto Speak English" . 81% of residents speak Spanish as the dominant language. The constitution doesn't say anything about not being allowed to bring about language requirements for states to be admitted"… How do you feel about this little dilemma..

There is no official national language for the US, why would we enforce one for one of our territories? Obviously it could be difficult for Puerto Rico to interact with other states, should it become one, but that doesn't mean it should be forced to make English its principal language. Maybe it should be a requirement that schools teach English but making it their principal language is a little extreme especially considering there is no law enforcing this, just a trend.
ReplyDeleteThis is a brilliant politcal maneuver by Santorum. Rather than attempt to win the 20 delegates Puerto Rico has to offer, delegates that he desperately needs, he has chosen to antagonize the nation by making the absurdly offensive demand that people who live in a Spanish speaking country should completely eradicate their language. While their at, they should probably work changing their skin color, right Rick? Now Santorum can tell show his constiuents how unreasonable, antiquated, truculent, and racis- I mean how devoted to Christian morals- he is. I'll bet he wins Alabama...
ReplyDeleteconsidering the obvious that the predominant language in America is "English", it is ironic that while Santorum thinks that a completely different culture must adopt our language in order to more or less "unite", we ( the parties )cannot understand one another even though we are speaking in the same tongue.
ReplyDeleteThese candidates are from another planet or something. Nobody can be this ignorant or outlandishly stupid to be considered worthy of Presidency. Mind you this is my opinon, but I can't be the only one here that is thinking this.
I don't think that Santorum is wrong. Puerto Rico shouldn't be a state if 81% of its residence speak spanish as their main language. We have to draw the line somewhere. I also think this comment was made to appeal to the extremists in the republican party in order to win the primary.
ReplyDeleteI think that Santorum is out of line by saying this. This reminds me of the problem that PA had with Geno's restaurant. They had a sign out that said "Please speak English". This brought up a lot of problems for the company, and I am sure lost them some customers. Just as it will effect Santorum in he will lose a decent portion of votes.
ReplyDeleteHe came out after saying this saying that he didnt mean it in that way and that he didnt mean to offend anyone. However, I bet you his staff just ripped him about how poor of a decision that was. Why he said it? I dont know why he would think that it was smart, cause it was one of the most stupid things he's done this election. I mean it is a common conservative idea that US should dominate the world and that everyone should speak English, but saying this was a little extreme.
ReplyDeleteOkay, Santorum...Great thinking. Make a comment about Puerto Rico while you're trying to win their 20 delegates? Why does it matter if Puerto Rico speaks English or not? First of all, they're not even an official state. Second of all, there is no official language for the US. I mean, I understand where he is coming from, but I don't think that English should need to be the primary language in Puerto Rico.
ReplyDeleteI don't want to sound receptive but I agree with Alyson. First of all, not a smart move for Santorum to make a comment like that when he is trying to win 20 delegates. Secondly, If i were a resident of Puerto Rico I would be offended by Santorum's comment regardless of how he meant it. This hurt Santorum bottom line.
ReplyDeletePuerto Rico has been flirting with the idea of becoming a state for a long time, but has been dragging its feet in the process. Adding more requirements to becoming a state is unnecessary and unlikely to ever happen. Santorum took his eye off the ball and got clocked. He clearly was not thinking about whether his actions or words on this issue will affect his electability. This statement, as Garrett said, may make him more popular with conservatives but it still is hurting him in the general election.
ReplyDeleteI think that adding a language requirement is unconstitutional and out of the question. I have heard talk about Puerto Rico becoming a state for years no, and I really dont think it will ever happen. I'm not sure why Santorum felt the need to address Puerto Rico, and Im not sure who he is trying to specifically appeal to.
