The Nonprofit 1 Percent

Article about ceos of nonprofit organizations and how they aren't so different from the ceos that movements like "Occupy" have villianized. These ceos have gone largely un-checked by public outcry, but maybe public outcry is short-sighted. The problem of wealth-division isn't just about lack of personal integrity, as the Occupy has claimed of the evil 1 percent. The problem might just be our economic structure, but not even altruists are immune to vastly unequal pay scales.

  1. Link doesn't work again. I don't know what the hell I'm doing wrong. I hate the internet. Here's the link: http://www.villagevoice.com/2012-03-21/news/the-nonprofit-one-percent/

  2. It's really terrible what happened to the Guild. People can be so blind. All those blind people who had to be relocated. As the article said since they're blind they had become acquainted with their surroundings and to relocate is a very big deal. $100,000 on imported furniture, is that even necessary? On top of that $100,000 was pocked on the sale of the guild by one of the officers. People have no idea what's going on.

  3. This is ridiculous. At this point I'm wondering if all CEO's are corrupt. Or at least have no clue as to what a salary should look like. Making over a million dollars a year is unnecessary, especially when the company or in this case, Guild, is cutting programs and workers. The CEO's need a reality check, and soon. Being this absurdly wealthy is ridiculous.

    1. I feel the exact same way as Joe. CEO's are just so wrapped up in their money, and that's it. It's out of hand. I think it's crazy how unfairly money is distributed. CEO's of companies have allllllll sorts of money, yet their company has to cut workers, because the CEO is just keeping the money to themselves. Ridiculous.

  4. Let's be real here... everyone loves money. But that doesn't mean you need to be bringing home seven figures a year. People really need to realize what's materialistically appropriate in today's world. I think it's the competition between these CEO's-- who has more money, who has more stuff-- that's keeping this issue driving on. If we could simply eliminate the competition of money and goods, I don't think we'd be having this discussion. But then again, competition is human nature, so I don't see this problem getting resolved anytime soon.

    1. I agree with you that competition will never fade away, but i 100% disagree that competition should try to be eliminated. Competition is what makes people thrive. Without a competition over goods and services, there would be no incentive to do well in order to get success. Is the gap of success in todays world extremely larger than it should be? Absolutely. However, that is what we should try to fix, but the elimination of competition is not the answer.

  5. The Voice could find no court record of any such suit ever being filed. The Daily News says the suit was settled in 2011 and that Henderson died of cancer that same year. Colleagues who worked with Henderson allege that he was fired with the Guild knowing how serious his illness was.

Greed, as it seems, is able to trump all sorts of emotions, compassion, or sympathy. When one is fueled purely by the love of money they seem to lose all sense of reality and the struggles of those around them. I'm surprised how long this Guild was able to continue operating.

  6. Green has been known to be the color of envy. These people are terrible. I don't see how someone could go into work with the blind and steal money like that. People have lost sight of what is truly important to have excess amounts of money that they probably just put in their bank accounts to say that they have it.

  7. It is really a shame to society in general for people to be so greedy. I dont know how people can sleep at night knowing that they are stealing ffrom blind people. I think that this will all get sorted out soon and justice will eventually be served. People have become materialistic and greedy and that is something that we will have to learn to live with.
