After Newtown, Congress Must Act on Guns, Pelosi Says

In this article, Nancy Pelosi says that if we come out of this shooting without change, it would be a dereliction of duty on part of the office. Nancy Pelosi goes on to say that there must be a way the Democrats and the Republicans can agree on this change. Later on in the article, they address the problem not as "gun control," but as "gun violence prevention." The article also talks about raising the debt limit.

I feel as though there needs to be a change in the gun control, but not as extreme as some may think. If anything, have a background check and see if there person was ever in jail, committed a crime, or has any disabilities (more mentally than physically). I am curious as to what they will settle on. What do you guys think?

  1. I agree with Aubrey. We do not need to do anything overly extreme with the guns, but we must make it much more difficult for people to obtain guns and open and concealed carrying licenses. This includes conducting more rigorous background checks, and not letting people who have served jail time for certain serious felonies(theft, assault, murder, etc.) even have a chance to get guns. From my perspective guns actually do make up for a good portion of the economy and removing them absolutely would not help our economy in the slightest considering the fact that some of the biggest gun manufacturers are American owned like Remington.

  2. I don't see how we can look at the Newtown shootings and not change something about our gun policy. We need to increase the qualifications to obtain a gun along with some form of ban on automatic, high-ammo capacity weapons. I understand the need of a pistol for self-defense in situations like a mugging, home invasion, etc. but unless you're living in a war-zone, you don't need military grade weapons. More attention towards the diagnosing and treatment of the mentally ill can also be a major change that can be implemented by Congress. There are many possible changes, so it would be a shame if our gun and/or mental illness policies stayed the same.

  3. Considering that another school shooting occurred just yesterday, it has come to the point where we need to take serious action and do it quickly. I never had a problem with guns until recently. My grandfather was a serious hunter and so when I was younger I saw them used only for sport. Now that I am older and see the horrible ways they are used, I don't see any good in them. It's unfair that children cannot feel completely safe at school and people cannot feel completely safe in public areas. I want to see serious restrictions in the near future.

  4. The problem with guns is that you can't just eliminate them because people will always find a way to get them. What needs to happen are more precautions. People should be educated on guns and it should be harder to get one. The types of guns available to the public are also ridiculous. I understand that people like to hunt, but no one needs a machine gun. Guns will be available, but there need to be some changes made in order to make guns less of a threat.

  5. I don't see a way to prevent events such as this without making drastic changes to gun laws as well as several other areas like school security and the mental health system. This will probably not happen though and a small compromise like implementing the assault rifles ban will come back. I think the American public and congress will forget about this in a few weeks though and not much will get done to prevent it until the next incident.

  6. As long as someone wants to get a hold of a gun they will get a hold of a gun. This is becoming more about the guns and less about the already obvious instability of the people wielding them. How about getting them help prior to their meltdown? Instead of them having a meltdown but then using something other than a gun to enact their revenge.

  7. Something has to be done about guns, whether its doing better background checks or banning semi-automatic military style guns. This is crazy. Also a trend that has been occurring with events like this is that, the shooters have been young males and the type of guns they used. The question I have is why would a normal person need a semi-automatic gun? It just doesn't make sense.
