New Senate Rules to Curtail the Excesses of a Filibuster

Republicans and Democrats have recently worked together(SHOCKER!) to limit filibusters' effectiveness in contributing to the gridlock that currently plagues today's congress. Legislation will still be slow, but at least it is a bipartisan reform and a step in the right direction. The votes for the measures were passed by an overwhelming majority of the senators. It is also stated that the Republicans are going to apparently give up their tactic of killing bills before they even get off the ground as well. It is nice to see that the politicians can agree on at least some of these issues and find common ground. As long as we make small steps in the right direction, we will eventually work our way out of the gridlock and back into effective bipartisan policy making.

  1. Thank you Lord! There is a god! Finally, the parties work together in Congress :) :) Congratulations! Let's have a party :D But for real, that's good! I am happy to see that they will stop that nonsense of "blocking bills" and actually give looking at the bills a try. I am also glad to see that the Republicans are making this giant step away from that. It is the one thing that is keeping our country from moving forward (well one of the many, but we are getting there; baby steps). I am glad to see that both parties are working together and (hopefully!) stop the gridlock! Does anyone also think it is convenient that the Republicans now issue this when it is Obama's last term in office? I do, obviously the Republicans realize this as well; but hey, I'm not complaining. President Obama may get even more stuff done this year!

  2. This is every good news. That being said I think it is kind of said that everyone is so exited that senators passes one bill with bipartisan support. That is how it is supposed to happen. I hope that this trend will keep going (most likely not) and Congress can be productive in the eyes of both parties. If the Republican leadership does not get their act together they are going to see some real consequences in the 2014 elections. It is in everyone's interest to put politics aside, and start putting the best interest of the country in mind.

  3. Wahoooo government being semi active and helpful and sorta kind of doing their job. I don't know how long it takes for both parties to realize they're doing no one a favor by acting like such immature sixth graders; Republicans really need to get the memo that we're no longer in middle school. There are things that need to be handled and bickering and "bill blocking" won't do that.

  4. Sebastian and Nora both bring up good points. It shouldn't be so exciting that something is actually happening in Congress. I'd love to see a Congress where Senators vote based on just what they feel is best for the country and not what the party ideals are, but obviously I realize that's not a realistic wish. Like Sebastian said, I hope this trend continues however I highly doubt that it will. The only time anything seems to happen in when there is no other option and change needs to be made.
