Pushback on Obama's Plan to Stem Gun Violence

Pushback on Obama's plan to stem gun violence

On Wednesday, Obama proposed a ban on military assault weapons and high-capacity magazine while also setting more strict background checks on all gun sales. Theses laws have to go through Congress, meaning that it will probably be dropped. Many members of the GOP disagree with these laws, such as Marco Rubio, who said that "Nothing the president is proposing would have stopped the massacre at Sandy Hook." I personally disagree and think that these laws are a good first step in reducing the amount of gun crimes in the U.S. I would like to see more emphasis on mental illness in the country though, since that is one of the recurring factors in recent mass shootings. This topic will continue to be talked about for a while, especially with increasing support for gun control and increasing participation and financial contributions for the NRA.

  1. I agree with Dave that it is finally time to for the president to buckle down and do something about the gun issue we have in this country. Marco Rubio claims that these actions by the president would not have prevented the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, this maybe true, but the actions can help prevent future occurances. I do not know why a normal civilian would ever need any rapid fire or power guns. I am glad President Obama is taking this step foward.

  3. What the president did was sign 23 executive orders on gun control. An executive order means that he does not need Congress' approval. He has asked Congress to look at some legislation that he does not have the power to pass on his own, and we all know how that is going to end. Many of the executive orders also addressed mental illness not just gun control. Some people are calling Obama a tyrant for passing these executive orders. I cant even describe how wrong, disrespectful, and manipulative that is. People need to put their egos aside so we can save millions of Americans lives from gun violence.

  4. I am so happy that we are finally seeing more regulation of guns in this country, but we are also moving in a positive direction for helping those with mental illness. I could not disagree more with Marco Rubio and it not only angers me but also upsets me that he could be so inconsiderate. Even if these 23 executive orders maybe would not have made a huge difference in the Sandy Hook shooting, I think we need to try everything until we find the best solution to stop gun violence in this country.

  5. At least there will be a stronger emphasis on mental stability which I feel is the larger issue since gun violence wouldn't be an issue if we didn't have a bunch of wack jobs running around dead set on killing everyone who ever once looked at them wrong.

  6. I'm glad something was at least attempted to be done by the president although I don't think it'll result in a whole lot of change in the rate of gun homicides per year. Maybe the ATF can become a little more powerful and start to regulate who can buy guns, but there are already so many guns out there that the regulation might not show for a while. I think its too late for the US to make a change drastic enough to cut down on gun violence immediately but hopefully these regulations will start to lead us to a safer future.

  7. I agree with Dave as well. If it was my choice, limiting specific guns that can be sold (such as the really dangerous ones like some machine guns, etc.)isn't really the problem. I am very happy the Obama wants to be more strict on gun sales and background checks. That's really all that needs to be more strict. Other than changing what guns could be sold, I feel that (as I have stated before in many other blogs) that it is the background checks and state of mental awareness that needs to be checked.
