While the video is a bit over the top with the music and presentation, I think what it points out on how the argument for gun control parallels the argument against abortion is important, especially for the latter, where government policy would clearly make a difference.

This video is very interesting. Grace is right; it parallels the argument of gun control with the argument of abortion. If President Obama speaks so openly about saving and protecting innocent children lives, should he not feel the same about abortion being a malpractice? This is a hard question because while I am pro-life in my views I could never tell someone what she is allowed/not allowed to do with her body. My question is: can Obama restrict our second amendment rights if he does not uphold the same values in restricting abortion?
ReplyDeleteI find it disgusting that Obama's speech would be taken out of context and used like this. The tragedy that happened at Sandy Hook has nothing to do with abortion. Many things could be connected to life and death! The reason Sandy Hook has brought up the issue of gun rights is because it was a shooting. The fact that politicians are willing to use the death of 26 people to further a cause unrelated to the issue makes me sick.
ReplyDeleteTo be completely honest, my visceral reaction was similar to Talia's. It was hard for me to focus on any parallel between the argument against gun control and the argument against abortion as Obama gave his speech; I thought only of the tragedy and how it was being used now to advocate a completely separate cause. Obama is obviously pro-choice; his speech was solely intended to offer support to Americans who are mourning in the face of this tragedy, and as Talia stated, was used out of context.
DeleteI agree with Talia and Kira I don't believe Sandy Hook should be politicized I see it as in mildly poor taste but necessary for the gun control conversation but to extend this tragedy to more political issues is flat out scummy to me.
