Obama Raising the Debt Ceiling

Obama makes opening move in this year’s debt ceiling debate. This article talks about the speech Obama made today where he declared he his plans of raising the debt ceiling for this year. Obama claims this is a necessary action in order to stop America's habit of “lurching from crisis to crisis to crisis.” and prevent it from becoming a "deadbeat nation". The fact that Obama is showing little disregard for the opinions of the Republicans on this issue is aggravating. However, what upsets me about his plan here is that he is merely continuing to kick the can down the road, rather than dealing with America's debt problem. Consistently claiming that now is not the time/ we cannot pay this debt off right now, only allows for America's debt to continuously increase.

  1. I agree with what Lauren s saying and would question Obama's logic in saying that raising the debt ceiling is not the equivalent of authorizing further spending. Perhaps we can solve the issue by, I don't know, spending a less in a way that is sustainable and that we can ACTUALLY pay off, rather than raising the debt ceiling. It's not that the majority of the money isn't going to important things, but when you can't afford something, you can't afford it, whether it's a beneficial program or not.

  2. I would like to see our debt problem dealt with once and for all. However, Obama is not the sole person at fault for the issue. Both parties need to work together. I have to admit, though, from the lack of progress to the abundance of issues, I find myself confused and not sure what the specific best course is for fixing our nation's issues. Hopefully, Washington can figure it out, because it's about time for our nation to recover.

  3. I think raising the debt ceiling is the same as spending more money. I think the best way to solve the debt problem would be for both parties to work. It seems like solving this problem is going to take awhile.

  4. I agree with Sara. To raise the debt ceiling is very similar to spending more money that we dont have. Both parties need to work together and dare I say... compromise. Our country relies on these political leads and they are failing us.

  5. It is discouraging to see that our nation's debt is not being dealt with and is something being put off for later. I do not know what course of action should be taken necessarily but something should be done to lower the debt not just make it excusable.

  6. I agree that Obama's just making it worse for the country by not dealing with the debt and letting it go on. It's just going to get worse and while it might not be able to be dealt with right now, something should at least be done about it.

  7. I agree with the general consensus that the time for action is now. Although so much easier said than done, the House Republicans and our president need to work on a plan that is both fair and effective. That much is obvious. Whether or not the plan that they eventually come up with will be described as such remains to be seen.

  8. I definitely do think that this needs to be resolved as soon as possible, but Congress's seeming inability to be bipartisan is stonewalling the entire process. I think this plan that seems as though he is just kicking it down the road is a desperate effort to allow as much time as possible to get everyone to try to agree. The article started out talking about how suspicious the Republicans are of everything Obama does. At some point they need to suck it up and work with the Democrats to fix the United States of America. It is their job after all,Republicans and Democrats. We elected them to do it, so they should stop talking and just do their job.

  9. I absolutely agree with Lauren. Obama is only kicking the can down the road. Both parties need to reach a compromise. Overall, I think we need to spend less and cut more from our budget. We've seen what's happened by spending excessively, and I really don't want another crisis like this to happen again by 2016.

  10. we have a system of gridlock in Washington right now where many members of Congress are not rewarded for bipartisanship and are instead treated as if they have given into the other side so the only thing that any politician will be able to garner enough support for is a policy that kicks the can down the road also if you look at raising the debt ceiling since 1960 it has been done 78 times so I dont understand all of the recent criticism on Obama for raising the debt ceiling

  11. This nation is certainly depending on a compromise between both parties at the moment, so it will be interesting to see if it ever will come to that. Avoiding the problem at hand will only make it worse in the future. I hope that a consensus will be met soon.

  12. I think it is pretty bad that we are already in so much debt but this would allow the amount of debt to only increase. To me it would be taking a step backwards. As Jeff said it has been done multiple times but I think lack of education is present.

  13. There obviously needs to be more compromise between the parties (easier said than done). This isn't one man's fault, but I think it would be nice for Obama to make the first effort towards compromise.

  14. I agree with Jeff and Ian that it is a step backwards. We need the compromise between the two but that is always so much harder to accomplish then everyone thinks. If we don't deal with the problem now, what will happen in the future?
