Reaction to Newtown Shootings Spreads to Corporate America

This article talks about the reaction of corporate America to the horrific events that transpired on Friday in Newtown, Ct. Many companies that sell firearms have removed the ones used in the event from their website while a private equity firm that has holdings in Colt Defense have announced they will be immediately selling the company. This event has of course sparked the debate once again about whether or not there needs to be some sort of ban on assault rifles. It seems to me to be extremely similar to the war on drugs here in America. Meth and Cocaine aren't legal substances; however, people are able to obtain and abuse them. Some sort of ban on assault weapons won't stop the problem. People will still be able to get them. They'll just be coming from South America and Mexico.

  1. I thought these gun restrictions were enacted awhile ago, but I guess I was wrong. No matter how many restrictions you put on guns or on anything for that matter, it comes down to the individual who uses it. It is there decisions on it, so as much as I agree with putting more restriction, there will always be crazy people who do terrible things. I wish they would go away. Nora is right, if we just ban guns in general, that is a problem too People will just smuggle them in like drugs, which is pointless. I feel strongly to not legalizing drugs because they are nothing but terrible for humans, but guns are also terrible, but it is another thing that is left up to the government and the people.

  3. I don't even see how it is a question that we need more gun control. Tragedies like this do not happen in other countries because they have extremely strict gun control laws. Americans are mocked by how little we control guns. By saying gun control won’t help is just giving up and letting the bad guys win. Does anyone not see a problem that 40% of guns in this country are purchased without a background check? On corporate American, I think every business has the right to do whatever they want to do. Many stopped selling assault rifles as a sign of respect for the victims; others did it because they realized that citizens should not be able to possess those types of weapons. If we really wanted to we could get illegal drugs out of this country. IF we spent the money and resources towards that goal we could, but that is not where Americans priorities are. They would think why we are spending all of this money against drugs when we can’t even solve of deficit. America needs to make gun control a priority, and hopefully that will happen soon.

  4. I am not for absolute gun control. That being said, I have always thought that our gun laws were too far too loose as well. While owning guns is a protected right of Americans, pro-gun Americans should be at least understanding of the situation, but instead they want guns on school property carried by teachers? Sorry no, not even because I do not want to see Mr. Ludwig with a pistol in class(which would only add to his intimidation factor, but I still love that man!) I do not trust other students. What would happen if a student got his hands on a teacher's gun? If someone got into the school and held up teachers, they would literally just be getting more ammo. My bottom line, more gun control needs to happen for the sake of this country.

  6. Yes there needs to be more restrictions, but it would silly to try and completely eliminate guns. People will always find a way. There definitely should be more gun education and safety classes. What happened was a tragic, but the guns were legally attained by the shooter's mother. Even though this is a terrible situation guns will always be available. With that being said changes do need to be made in order to try and minimize disasters like this one.
