Should teachers carry guns in school?

In the wake of the mass shooting in Connecticut lawmakers in texas, Oklahoma, and Oregon are proposing laws to allow teachers and educators to carry firarms with special training if they all ready have concealed carry licenses/permits. Many law abiding citzens have ccls but are not permitted to go into schools with them because of the existing laws.

  1. I don't think arming more people would help in a situation like this. Having multiple sources of gunfire is just asking for more victims. I think there is a greater risk of arming some other mental case who is masquerading in society as a teacher than there is possible benefit if/when the next major school shooting occurs.

  2. I absolutely agree with Grace that arming more people will not help the situation. In fact, more accidents could arise. There was a story on the news recently about a kid who hurt a family member when he got ahold of his parent's gun. It is possible for something similar to occur in schools. I think the more guns that are out there, the higher the risk of an accident is. Yes, we cannot control everything, but stricter gun laws would be a positive improvement.

  3. I agree with both Grace and Talia. This is going a bit over board. Actually, kind of ironic in a way. A guy shoots the children and the people who it effected don't want guns to be sold/around, and yet, they want to give more guns out to other people? That is a bit ridiculous. I know it was a terrible thing to happen to these children, but laws like this would only make the chance of a shooting happen again sky rocket even more.

  4. Allowing teachers to carry guns would cause more problems. A child could easily get a hold of it. A teacher might get really angry and might use it against the students. More guns create more deaths.

  5. Arming teachers would not solve the problem. We cannot ensure the sanity, mental health, or responsibility of such teachers. And if we allow our teachers to carry guns, more shootings are plausible. If teachers are not responsible, even their students could get ahold of their gun.

  6. I disagree, with certain limitations. I think that teachers should know how to fire a gun in case a physical altercation occurs and they somehow end up with a gun. I also feel like there should be a few emergency only safes in hidden places that only the principal and teacher should know about just in case anything happens. A killer would think twice about attacking a school if he/she knew that there were hidden weapons in the building that teachers knew how to use. It's a little unrealistic, and I realize that.

  7. I do not believe several guns should be allowed in a school and teachers should not be able to possess such guns. Yet, I do believe there should be security guard with one gun stored away if needed, or possibly a gun stored away that certain faculty members know of (the latter I recognize does have dangers).

  8. I certainly agree that equipping teachers with guns in school is not a smart plan. Not only would more guns involved create more victims, but many other tragedies could occur. Although I'm sure many extreme precautions would be taken to ensure that the guns are locked and secured, there's always some possibility that even a child could get to the guns somehow and be a threat to others.

  9. I totally support better security, but not the possession of firearms among teachers. No matter how securely hidden the arms may seem, there is always a risk of them getting into the wrong hands or an accident ensuing. If a poorly trained person or someone not used to such a high-risk situation is firing, even with the right intentions, it would do more harm than good.

  10. Allowing teachers to carry a weapon in schools is proposterous. Teachers are regular human beings too and if one human being can take the lives of so many people so can a teacher. This will not increase security it will only make the school a more dangerous place. As a student, I would not feel safe going into a school where teachers can carry a weapon and my parents would not be happy sending me to school with guns.

  11. I concur with mostly everyone that adding more guns to the equation would neither be a good a idea nor solve the problem. As the article indicates, the classroom can be a highly emotional place at times. If someone unstable were to have access to a gun, there is no telling what the outcome might be. I would not feel more safe at my school knowing that there are guns. Also, it is federal policy that schools be a gun-free zone, so it will be interesting to see what will become of this issue.

  12. I believe that if guns are allowed in school security is the only department that should be allowed to possess a gun. That being said, I would never trust half of the security guards at Penncrest. I surely do not have much faith in them other than a select few because I do not think they are fit for the job anymore. I think if schools add more security they need to hire guards that would actually be able to do something if a serious problem occurred.
