Romney plays for evangelical support before South Carolina Debate
Romney decided to address a series of social issues before a largely Evangelical conservative crowd. This is a pretty big move for Romney, especially so close to the South Carolina debate. With 44% South Carolinians identifying themselves as Evangelical, this is probably going to have quite an influence on the outcome of the debate/voting turnout.

Mitt Romney's mormon right? Evangelicals are not going to vote for a mormon. But his trying to appeal to them is further evidence of the chameleon-like philosophy he brings to campaigning that everybody hates. He can't possibly win a faction that is defined by their opposition to his religion. He shouldn't be trying to get their votes. This is why nobody really likes him because instead of trying to build a coalition of voters, he's trying to unite the entire Republican party under him, even if they're opposed to him. He is far too willing to morph his message depending upon who he's talking to.
ReplyDeleteRomney being Wise. However to further appeal to these religious voters through the discussion of same sex marriages certainly will make peoples lean in to hear what's going on. Everyone against Obama wants to hear about how Candidate X doesn't like Factor Y about Obama's plans/views and how this candidate will change this. Newest Endorser: John Huntsman…hm…Well I mean the more the merrier.
ReplyDeleteI think Obama's decision to try to pave the path for same sex marriage to spread across the country is a good idea. Every time Obama takes a step forward, Romney try's to bring him back down.

I think this is a smart move by Romney, what does he have to lose. We know that he has the north-east wrapped up (concerning republican voters) and it's obvious that his weakness is in the south. Even if it's a crowd that doesn't necessarily find him appealing. Romney needs to get his message across any way he can. If he wins over a few people, great. If not, he's right back where he started so it makes no difference.
ReplyDeleteThis move was actually quite smart of him. He realizes that now with only four people in the race, he needs to take away some of Santorum's votes: the evangelical ones. Santorum up to this point has been the more religious, social issue candidate, and if Romney can change that, he will have a far better chance of winning.
ReplyDeleteThis was a good attempt for Romney at getting more support - it definitely won't hurt him but who knows if it'll actually help him. His lack of support is definitely coming from the south, so he's just doing anything he can to try and gain some votes from them and perhaps increase his chance of winning.
ReplyDeleteRomney is trying desperately to try to get any kind of support from staunch conservatives. I think that it is a good idea for Romney, but I think people (even in the South) are smart enough to realize what he is trying to pull. Hopefully people will not change their vote due to this last second attempt by Romney; however, that does not mean that people won't.
