New Chapter for the U.S.
Obama promises help to the Iraqui Prime Minister, Nuri Al-Maliki, after the last American troops withdrawlfrom Iraq. Obama and al-Maliki met in the White House to declare the war officially over after 8 years. Obama told the visiting Prime Minister that they would build a partnership, including trade between the two countries. Al-Maliki said he is committed to building ties between the two nations.

Will Iraq be stable without us intervening? Have we (the training wheels) taught them how to balance themselves. The training wheels are about to be removed…can they ride the bike by themselves. It should be interesting how neighbors of Iraq react to the (home alone) country after our withdrawal. Have all these years finally paid off? We will never know until we set them free. #setthemfree #riskitallbecauseromneyhasn'tbeenriskinganewgamplanforhisdebates.
ReplyDeleteIt's great to finally see plans for all the soldiers coming home. Hopefully it will actually be a "new chapter" in the countries relationship with Iraq. The plans are set, it is just time to see how the country responds to its new freedom. Hopefully the decision to sell them 36 fighter jets doesn't come back against us. Also, it was interesting how Obama said the government plans to help Iraq "ramp up oil production." I somehow don't see us helping them sell it anywhere but the US.
ReplyDeleteWe should just cut our losses when it comes to diplomatic relations with Iraq. By violently occupying their country for 8 years, we haven't exactly won the favor of the common Iraqi, only the Iraqi government that we supported. If the Arab Spring and the fact that it took us almost a decade to reach the necessary level of confidence in the competence Iraqi government to leave them in charge taught us anything, it is that these and this middle eastern government is weak and temporary. The Iraqi people do not like the United States, and they will not like their government supporting us. I expect another popular uprising to remove this government from power in favor of a more radical populist government. This government will respond to public sentiment, a decidedly unfavorable one for the US, and use those 36 fighter jets we gave them against us.
ReplyDeleteWe wasted too much time in Iraq, we should have pulled out ages ago. A war was started and lied about to the American people, and then when everyone found out about it, we still didn't pull out for years. I would be more proud if we had pulled out before, but we took too long on this war. Also, trade agreements should most definitely be made, because America tried to help Iraq, and I know that the Iraqi's do not believe us, we did just want to help, so if trade agreements can not be made, we should just give up on anything Iraqi. Except oil, because that's all we care about.
ReplyDeleteI find that the United States military will leave Iraq, but United States politics will continue to have a major impact on Iraq. I think that democracy is the best form of government in existence (although it is not perfect), and I think that it is important for Iraq to display how successful this form of government can be. I think that this example is as far as the U.S should go in "persuading" the other Middle Eastern countries in changing to a democratic form of government---the U.S has no right to change things that no member of that country wants to be changed. I am glad this war is officially over, but I think that people must realize that the U.S will still have a major grip on Iraq and its government.
ReplyDeleteI'm more than happy to see that war has finally ended after eight pointless years of it. However, I'm also anxious to see what kind of backlash the US might feel from it. We've been in Iraq for so long, they could either crumble without us, rebel and use our own fighter jets against us, or carry on peacefully as a normal, independent nation. As much as I'd love the last option to go into effect, I'm not sure that will be the result. It's not like we haven't made any enemies since we've occupied Iraq. There are bound to be people that are ready to get back at us for infiltrating their homes.
ReplyDeleteObama is merely fulfilling the promises he made when he ran for office. It has been 8 long years in Iraq and it is time to come home. The main problem of stabilizing Iraq was the tensions of having foreign soldiers in Iraq. Every country prefers its own corrupt government to another country's democratic government. Withdrawing the soldiers helps to stabilize Iraq and will give Iraq the chance to be a free and democratic government. The enemies will become fewer as the soldier withdraw, and any leftover enemies of the Iraqi government can be taken care of by the Iraqi government itself. Pulling out does not mean the United States is not going to pay attention to Iraq ever again. There is little to no threat of Iraq surprising the United States with enemies.
