The Myth of Supply Side Economics

Finally, our favorite presidential centrist has said something with conviction: that supply side economics simply does not work. It would appear as if Obama's frustration with his congressional opposition has boiled over, as he is going after something as near and dear to the hearts of the Republican Party as oil and tax cuts. Do you believe in supply side economics? If yes, empiracally prove why. If no, explain why Republican politicians, as well as the people who vote for them, continue to champion it.

  1. Free Shots At Teddy eh Mister Barack? I feel like Barack is trying to pull a Rick Perry Comeback on all in favor of supply side economics. Problem is Rick Perry's Comebacks and or statements that he makes a lot of the time simply make him sound dumber. Clearly, Obama attempts to feel the empathy of the less fortunate and wants to stand tall for them and give them a fighting chance if they have nothing. Was this speech about trickle down economics not working completely convincing enough to shoot down republicans entirely? #notachance In my opinion, it was a wise thing to bring up and this fits well with his "change". Someday this fairness he speaks of may happen, you never know.

  2. Nothing gets me more pumped than when Obama takes charge and tells Congress to take a seat. I agree with his statements, trickle-down and supply side economics obviously aren't doing much good for the country. He definitely used this speech to state some of the positions he will hold in the next election so that he stays in the voters' eyes and I think it was an effective way to do it. The Republican party clings to supply side economics because, as Obama said, it "speaks to our rugged individualism and healthy skepticism of too much government." It benefits the leaders of the party and reduces government's say in economics.

  3. I can respect this. I like how Obama wrote most of the speech himself. It shows that he actually wanted to put himself into this speech, and I applaud his use of the town's history of another economic presidential speech from Teddy Roosevelt. I believe that this speech was well thought out because as the Republicans all fight for the one general election spot, Obama looks like Midas, as this speech is just gold. He rips the republicans to shreds, and they can't compete right now.

  4. I agree with Obama's statements - trickle down and supply side economics really aren't working for the US. “This isn’t just another political debate. This is the defining issue of our time,” he said. “This is a make or break moment for the middle class, and all those who are fighting to get into the middle class." and I think Obama is absolutely right. Our economy has gone to such crap, and he knows he needs to do something about it, so it's good that he voiced his position on the topic.
Also, I think Obama's speech will be effective in that it will help to get attention of the voters for the upcoming presidential election.

  5. I really like that Obama finally decided to stand up and take a shot at the Republican based Congress and say that their methods of stabilizing the economy clearly are not working. I cannot believe that Gringrich said, "...poor children could be put to work in certain circumstances, such as mopping the floors at schools". Trickle down economics has not shown any flashes drastic improvements in the economy event though the government is putting a drastic amount of money into the bailout. I think that it is beyond unfair that the new generation of citizens are being born into debt.

  6. Well, I know that this is gonna make me seem uber staunch, but trickle down economics sure worked for Ronald Reagan. I disagree with Obama when he says that the concept of trickle down economics isnt working, and say that the people who are in power now (not just Obama) are just not doing the process of TD economics right. I also believe that it is not fair to say that TD economics doesnt work when we havent even been doing that, because the wealthy are getting taxed more than others. This also shows that Obama really needs to stop being compared to Ronald Reagan, because their views actually dont realign.

  7. First off what Gingrich said "The former House speaker has recently suggested that poor children could be put to work in certain circumstances, such as mopping the floors at schools." #MessedUp, And Garrett times have changed this is not the same America during Reagan's presidency. This America is Trillions of dollars in debt. I think this was a good stepping stone for Obama and his quest for "change". Like Liam said, you never know.

  8. Our economy is clearly is big issue. This will effect us and many future generations. I don't think that supply side economics are exactly working for us due to our current situation, but I don't think it's completely a bust. I'm glad that Obama was so upfront about it. This is an issue that will not just go away, it needs to be dealt with, and both parties need to work together on it.
