The article "Republicans Sign Brief in Support of Gay Marriage" discuses the shift in support of gay marriage and the push in Washington right now to repeal Proposition 8, an initiative barring same-sex marriage. Including some of President George W. Bush's top advisers, dozens of prominent Republicans are arguing for equal rights for gay people to be able to marry, saying now that the allowance of same-sex marriages will promote family values, individual freedoms, and so on. Surprisingly even some of the more conservative Republicans including Jon Huntsman and Meg Whitman are in favor of the push.
As times are changing it is important and necessary that our government changes with it. In a country that claims to give freedom to all, in my opinion, this never should have needed discussion. I see no need for the government to interfere with the rights of the citizens to make personal, lifestyle decisions, but since there are those who feel they have the right to tell some citizens they cannot live the life the wish to lead, I am very excited to hear that there is a shift in Washington and that it is headed in a positive direction.

I completely agree with Lauren. I find it funny how the Republicans now side with same sex marriage. I think that is so funny. The reason they finally sided with it is because they know they would never win anything dealing with same-sex marriage if they were against it. I find that if some truly loves another person (man man; woman woman; woman man) they should be allowed to get married. There should be no question. Times have changed and the government is finally reacting.

ReplyDeleteI also agree. It is time for us as a country to move on from this debate of gay rights. We are suposed to be a country known for its freedoms, rights, liberties. If we are preventing the GBLTQ community from getting married we are not truly giving freedoms, rights, and liberties to everyone in this country. We are the land of opportunity, and until Congress passes some gay- rights reform we will be preventing opportunity for millions of Americans. I am very happy the GOP is moving in this direction.
ReplyDeleteGay marriage is just such a non-issue issue for me. I don't see why it's debated, I don't see why it's an issue. Just move on. They're not bothering you by getting married.
ReplyDeleteGay marriage will inevitably be legal in all states eventually. Most Americans support it, especially younger ones, and some Republicans who have previously opposed it may realize that this is a voting block which could be won over in part if Republicans are willing to cave on this issue. The supreme court might just overturn the ban against it anyway in coming weeks.
ReplyDeleteI agree with everyone here that gay marriage should and will be legalized everywhere in this country. It is complete hypocrisy on the part of the supposed party of freedom and anti-government intrusion to deny Americans the right to marry whomever you want. This issue is similar to that of immigration. Ultra-conservatives are hurting the Republican Party at the polls because they are slow and unwilling to respond to changing public attitudes.
ReplyDeleteEven though many of these Republicans are supporting gay marriage for votes, I'm glad people are gaining more and more freedoms. Gay marriage is going to be passed soon if both parties are willing to support it in a usually partisan government.
ReplyDeleteI'm happy that the gay community is finally getting marriage rights. Honestly, who should have a right telling you who you can and cannot marry? No one should, especially the government. If someone really loves someone else that and it happens to be someone of the same gender it is their decision and you should respect that.
ReplyDeleteI agree with everyone that gay marriage should be legalized in this county. If anyone or anything the government is the last thing that should interfere with personal lives of the people. Everybody should have the freedom to do what they want to do with their personal lives. After all this is the country of freedom for everyone.
