Obama to announce 34,000 troops to come home
Personally, I am very pleased to hear this, as many other Americans are. As stated, about 80% of Americans agree with withdrawing our troops and ending the war in Afghanistan. Obama is also planning on doing this ahead of the original schedule. It has moved up a few months from what they planned and will be planning on withdrawing everyone and ending the war in 2014. This move alone will reduce hour troops in Afghanistan by 50%. Afghanistan will soon be leading all of their security and military operations completely on their own.

I am happy about this! We needed to end this and bring troops home. Obama did the right thing by doing this early instead of going by the original schedule. This probably surprised millions upon millions of Americans. I am proud that this is happening and the troops deserve to come home.
ReplyDeleteAt the end pf the article when they discuss the sequester's effect on our armed forces, I think it is interesting to remember that Obama was the one who proposed the sequester (according to both Democrat and Republican congressmen SEE: http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2013/02/10/lawmakers-agree-budget-sequester-isnt-good/), and yet in the State of the Union address, even he admitted that it was a bad idea.
ReplyDeleteThis is just another example of Obama keeping a promise. This is so good for our country. Not only that the troops will be out of harms way, but that we will not be throwing away so much of our money towards unnecessary war. The situation has changed since the sequester was passed. It was designed to force Congress to act, and if they didn't there would be serious consequences. Now, with such a unproductive Congress as we have now it is scary to think that it is very possible they will not figure something out, and it will go into affect. We have to look at everything in perspective.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad that troops are coming home. I am in favor f war only if the nation's safety is at risk. As seeing as we are no longer in danger, I'm glad that he's pulling troops out. However, wasn't he supposed to do this in his first term?
ReplyDeleteTo me, it is good to see that promises are being kept by the executive branch, better late than never. I'm glad that the troops are going to be coming home.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Katie in that its better late than never. I do believe that they should have been brought home a while ago but im glad they are now coming home.
DeleteI am so glad that the troops are coming home. I think it is time, since we are longer in danger. I think this decision will make many Americans happy.
ReplyDeleteI agree that it's good to see that promises are being kept and troops are being brought home. A lot of people will be happy that action is finally being taken and something positive is happening.
ReplyDeleteBringing troops home is easier said than done, so I am very pleased about Obama keeping his promise.
ReplyDeleteI am happy to hear that troops will be coming home, and that there are plans for even more reduction of troops in Afghanistan through 2014, as Afghans take responsibility for their security. These men and women have worked long enough in Afghanistan and deserve to come home.
ReplyDeleteAs most everyone has said I'm happy to see many of America's soldiers returning home now that the Afghan forces are more equipped to hold the country on their own hopefully we will be able to withdraw completely in the near future
ReplyDeleteI can understand the general jubilation at withdrawing troops, but I can't help but feel aprehensive about abandoning Afghanistan. As someone outside of the government I see no evidence that the Afghan forces are now able to handle themselves other than what I have been told. As much as I love to play the paranoid consipracy theorist, I do want a little more evidence of Afghan competency beyond being told that they are fine.
ReplyDeleteIt is a relief to hear that more than half of the troops are expected to come home within a year. I wish they could have come home sooner, but I have confidence that their removal will not cause any further problems or tension between the U.S. and Afghanistan.
ReplyDeleteI am so happy to hear that our troops will be coming home. Their hard work and bravery is so appreciated and now they deserve to come home. I hope that this removal will not cause any more problems.
ReplyDeleteThis is great for the entire country and it is certainly a matter that affects everyone in some way. I was talking to a friend recently and she said her brother (a civil engineer) was going to Afghanistan next week, which shows the progress because there are now engineers rather than the military to come to aid.
ReplyDeleteWe've definitely established our presence in the middle east, as well as our bully mentality; however, this announcement is well over due because our purpose these last few years has been extremely unclear. Rebuilding is the best we can do now, stop fighting and actually rebuild.
