Deal on Gun Background Checks Hinges on Tracking Sales

Deal on Gun Background Check Hinges on Tracking Sales

Senators are discussing the expansion of background checks on firearms, and they are unsure of where and how to manage the paperwork for firearm sales. Many advocates of Gun rights are worried that if the federal government collects these records it could be the basis for a national gun registry, which is not permitted under the current law. Tom Cobourn, a Senator from Oklahoma, doesn't feel that negotiations are close to meeting a compromise, but men such as Mark Haze, director of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, says that the agreements are almost there. Is this just a topic that the two sides can't agree on? What should really be done about the paperwork for the firearm sales?

  1. With the numerous gun articles I have written on, it still stands with me that they should check people's background and be very wary about selling guns to anyone who has a mental disability, has been in jail, etc. I feel like they will have to compromise at some point soon because people will get real angry real fast if nothing is done about this issue.

  2. I think this a good meeting point for the disagree about gun control. It allows people to still have guns, but also tightens up the restrictions of who can have guns. This would benefit our country, if this law was passed.

  3. I still stand by that such checks will be ineffective and costly to track. If we were dealing with always law abiding citizens who got their guns through legal arms sales- well, then there wouldn't be an issue.

  4. I think that background checks are important because they can help to minimize unstable people from getting guns without stepping on the rights of citizens to have guns

  5. Background checks are extremely important. Weapons should not be handed out to just anyone!

  6. Obviously background checks won't be completely preventative, but that doesn't mean they aren't effective.

  7. I doubt added restrictions on owning firearms will make a substantial difference, rather I believe they are a waste of time and resources. The people dangerous to us regarding firearms, are those who already/will continue to disregard the law. So why would they follow these added restrictions now?

  8. I think that people's backgrounds should definitely be checked before buying firearms. I dont think it will necessarily work and be completely effective because there are loop holes and ways around it, but it's still a good thing.

  9. I recently went to a gun show with my dad. My dad wanted to but a Barretta hand gun. When he sat down to get his background check done, a seemingly harmless elderly man sat down and wanted to buy a hand gun. My dad was approved, but the other man was rejected. There are background checks being done. Not that he did, but my dad could have just bought the gun for a friend of his who couldn't buy a hand gun. If all guns were banned, his little joe shmoe friend would still be able to find a way to buy a gun if it's what he wanted. Restrictions are uneffective.

    1. I'm sorry, but I don't see it that way. Restrictions are effective because if something is simply not available for purchase than the only place to get it would be from the black market. And what I want to know is where is this black market? The only way I think gun control would be effective would be if we took Britain levels of gun control. While everyone may look at me aghast, I don't care. Its what seems to work. I mean, their gun homicide rate has gone down significantly. Why? Because they restricted guns.

    2. If your dad did that he would be breaking the law. Period.

  10. I do not that think that background checks can completely prevent those who shouldn't have a gun not having one, but I do think that they can help limit the number of guns out there in the wrong hands.

  11. I agree with Katie. Background checks cannot prevent everyone who shouldn't own a gun from having one. A background check looks into the persons past but it cannot read into a persons future. A good person in the past could turn bad in a matter of minutes.

  12. While background checks may not COMPLETELY prevent people who shouldn't have guns from having them, it will prohibit at least some of those people from legally purchasing guns. Although some people would go out of their way to obtain a gun illegally, not everyone would do so. Saving a human life is worth the trouble of background checks, in my opinion.

  13. As Kira said background checks will not completely prevent selling guns to people who should not have them but it takes a step in the right direction. Unfortunately, guns will still be obtained illegally and I don't think that will ever change.

  14. Background checks are certainly important yet the question arises of how effective this procedure would truly be. It's certainly proving to be difficult to decide how to go about gun control at this time.

  15. I think background checks on firearms are a great idea. It prevents people who have a criminal record to easily obtain a gun. Obviously, if the person doesn't have a record and has bad intentions, then you aren't really preventing anything, but I think it's a good idea.
