McConnell:Senate GOP Could Filibuster
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, though not calling for a filibuster yet, he left the possibility open when he discussed Senator Hagel's nomination for Secretary of Defense. Such a move would be "unprecedented", as no Cabinet nomination has ever been filibustered before. This filibuster actually occurring is unlikely given that a handful of Republican senators, including most notably John McCain, have come out either in support of Hagel or against a filibuster. Even so, I think this article goes along with what we were talking about in class about the expanded role of the filibuster in the Senate. However, I believe it would be too overtly partisan and unproductive to filibuster the Hagel nomination.

I think it is unlikely that there will be an attempt at filibustering the cabinet nomination. If the writer of the article was able to find about 6 republicans who would most-likely support a vote of cloture there would probably be enough for a successful vote of cloture and McConnell would not want the embarrassment of a highly publicized failed filibuster.
ReplyDeleteI agree that a filibuster of the Hagel nomination would be a poor use of time. Perhaps it is suggestions such as this that give the filibuster a bad name.
ReplyDeleteThis article shows how filibusters are more being used more and more, even if this filibuster is unlikely to happen.
ReplyDeleteThe mere fact that the filibuster would be unprecedented for such a circumstance would have led me to believe that the filibuster would be unsuccessful.
DeleteI agree that a filibuster in this case would be an an over expanded use of that particular power and a waste of time. Also if the man is actually incompetent enough to have that kind of opposition then hopefully someone would notice that and reject his nomination. We should have enough faith in the system to believe that.

ReplyDeleteThough it probably won't happen, it's circumstances like this that give the filibuster such a bad name.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Talia when she said that maybe events like this are why the filibuster has a bad reputation. Although this threat of the filibuster of the Hagel nomination is unlikely, it's a good connection to the Cigler reading and how sometimes threats of a filibuster can even be powerful yet, if tested, most filibuster threats would not actually follow through.
ReplyDeleteI also agree that a filibuster with this would be a waste of time. This does give the filibuster a bad name because of how they can back everything up and waste time for something that could be essentially pointless.
ReplyDeleteI believe the man is crazy if he filibusters the position. He knows that filibusters add several delays in the Senate, and though he's using his resources, there's a difference between using it for good intentions and abusing it for seemingly good intentions.
ReplyDeleteI really hope the republicans don't try to filibuster a cabinet nomination when it is clear that they are at a disadvantage. There are so many better things for them to do, like actually start compromising on some policy positions, than a useless filibustering.
ReplyDeleteThe use of a filibuster in this situation would be a misuse of time and resources.
ReplyDeleteAgain, I agree with Aaron. Republicans would be down right stupid to attempt a filibuster that will ultimately still leave them as the minority. Our Congress really needs to spend their time more efficiently.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Ellie and Lauren and would say that a fillibuster on this matter would be a waste of time. As Sam said it would be abusing the fillibuster.

DeleteA filibuster would be very unnecessary. It's a waste of time and people abusing their powers.

DeleteThe process is extremely tedious to begin with and this just doesn't sound like a suitable time for the Republicans to attempt a filibuster. Really is a waste of time.
