Trump vs. Cruz: Two Bad Options

Recently, Ted Cruz has surpassed Donald Trump in national polls. According to one poll, Cruz has a 10% lead on Trump (31% to 21%), and in another, he has a 2% lead (28% to 26%). Some members of the GOP are relieved; they think anyone would be a better candidate than Trump. However, many GOP leaders only view Cruz as the lesser of two evils, and hope another candidate will win the nomination. What do you think? Is Cruz a better or worse alternative to Trump? Do you think Cruz will be the "compromise candidate," or is it still possible for someone besides Trump or Cruz to win the GOP presidential nomination?

  1. Neither Cruz nor Trump has shown the ability to compromise, which I think is necessary for an effective president. Cruz is probably better than Trump, but not by much. If either of them gets the nomination, the Republican party will be crushed in the general election. Marco Rubio still has a chance, but he has to catch up soon as his time is running out.

  2. I believe Cruz is definitely a better candidate than Trump. Cruz hasn't threatened to try to ban a religion from the United States. Cruz hasn't really budged on his viewpoints so I don't know if we can consider him the "compromise candidate" though.

  3. Cruz seems to be the better candidate as he understands the system better, but he does not seem to be better by much. I don't think that Cruz will be the "compromise candidate" that the GOP is looking for. The GOP candidates have been shuffling around their positions in the polls for awhile now so I don't think it's obvious at the current moment who the clear winner will be. Until then, it's simply best to wait and see how the primaries play out or if one candidate will manage to pull ahead with a large lead.

  4. The GOP will be crushed in the general election with either Cruz or Trump, who appeal to a small (but very loyal) population in the United States. Trump may do well among Republican voters, but will not bring any moderates or liberals to his side. The GOP may hope that neither will receive the nomination, but it is not looking promising for the rest of the field of candidates. If anyone will defeat them, I believe it will be Rubio, who may be successful in obtaining the younger vote.

  5. I think Cruz has proven to be the "lesser of two evils", because Cruz has yet to threaten an entire religion or plan to block Mexico from the rest of the continent like Trump has. Cruz is also a US Senator, where Trump holds no political office, so Cruz can navigate and knows our political system better than Trump. There are many candidates in the GOP race, but Cruz is not the compromise.
