Obama's Call to Action on Pressing Gun Control

Obama's Call to Action on Pressing Gun Control

In response to the three year anniversary of the tragedies at Sandy Hook Elementary, Obama spoke on behalf of the inaction and stalemate of any gun control laws getting passed. Obama and his staff are working to bring an end to the "gun-show loophole" although it will be very difficult to overcome. The strength of the gun lobby and its allies such as the NRA holds back any legislation that could prevent the next tragedy. Obama's call to action stands: "What if Congress did something -- anything -- to save one American, or a classroom of Americans, or a stadium's worth of Americans from losing their lives to gun violence in the years to come?" This issue of gun control has escalated immensely over that past years. So much so that in a recent Daily Show report, Trevor Noah cruelly joked that due to so many recent shootings, Obama should have a belt with a podium strapped to him in order to prepare him for constant response speeches. What is your stance on our current issues surrounding gun control? What do you think the Obama administration can do to keep Americans safe?

  1. I think that we need stricter gun control. The fact that not a single restriction on guns has passed is embarrassing. If the sale of highly lethal assault weapons can't be stopped, then at least improve background checks. I don't think that Obama will be able to do anything, because the longer the issue goes on, the more heated each side gets, and neither want to compromise. People should not be expected to buy a gun for self defense- there's not much that we can do.

  2. I, personally, support gun rights. If we put extreme measures to control guns, we are punishing people who follow the law. If someone is going to follow through with a plan to engage in a mass shooting, I believe they will do what ever is necessary to do so. A few strict gun control laws won't stop them. I believe that these mass shootings stem from a mental health issue in the United States.

  3. I doubt that further restrictions on gun control will do much. The misuse of guns will continue no matter how specific the restrictions are. The Obama administration could attempt to improve the background checks and I think that removing the gun-show loophole is important, but that's as far as the administration should go. Owning a gun is a right, if someone wishes to own one they should be able to.

  4. I am very torn in the gun control controversy because I believe it is an American's right to obtain a gun if he pleases, granted he has had background check, i.e. is not a convicted violent-criminal. Sadly, I don't think the shootings we've seen will stop with the passage of gun control laws, criminals will find their way to use a gun unregistered to their name.
