Obama Stresses the Importance of Gun Control
It's been three years since the elementary school shooting in Connecticut that claimed the lives of twenty-six people. There have been other shootings since then, resulting in further fatalities. President Obama is horrified at Congress' continued unwillingness to act in response. He says we need to establish stricter gun control, and improve the background checks required to purchase a gun. Currently, Obama is exploring a legal loophole that could allow him to take action without Congress. Do you think we need stricter gun control? Why or why not? Do you think Obama will be able to get around Congress to strengthen restrictions on guns? And, Obama says, "the rest of us will have to do what we can." What can we do?

I do think that we need stricter gun control. The fact that not a single restriction on guns has passed is embarrassing. If the sale of highly lethal assault weapons can't be stopped, then at least improve background checks. I don't think that Obama will be able to do anything, because the longer the issue goes on, the more heated each side gets, and neither want to compromise. People should not be expected to buy a gun for self defense- there's not much that we can do.
ReplyDeleteI, personally, support gun rights. If we put extreme measures to control guns, we are punishing people who follow the law. If someone is going to follow through with a plan to engage in a mass shooting, I believe they will do what ever is necessary to do so. A few strict gun control laws won't stop them. I believe that these mass shootings stem from a mental health issue in the United States. I don't think President Obama will make much headway with congress.
ReplyDeleteI don't really think we need stricter gun control. Background checks will only go so far when you consider that the black market will always be offering guns for sale. Gun misuse will continue no matter what restrictions are put on it. Obama may attempt to get around Congress, but I don't think he'll get very far with it. Gun control has been an issue for awhile and I don't think Congress will simply let Obama slip by with a loophole.
ReplyDeleteI do think we need stricter gun control. There are too many loopholes in the system, such as the gun show loophole, which allows people to purchase guns without background checks. The "black market" is not nearly as accessible as people think; yes, in many cities, it is easy to find a gun illegally. In most of the country, however (and most of these mass shootings are not taking place in cities), it is very easy and legal for someone to buy an assault weapon without proper security measures. Unfortunately, the preservation of an interpretation of the second amendment (which ignores the "militia" part) trumps the preservation of American lives in the eyes of Congress.
ReplyDeleteI am very torn in the gun control controversy because I believe it is an American's right to obtain a gun if he pleases, granted he has had background check, i.e. is not a convicted violent-criminal. Sadly, I don't think the shootings we've seen will stop with the passage of gun control laws, criminals will find their way to use a gun unregistered to their name.
