GOP Leaders Caught in Standoff with Trump

GOP Leaders have long feared the rise of Donald Trump. Many Republican officials and strategists believe that the nomination of Trump would lead to an electoral wipeout and would undo some of the gains that they have made in recent congressional, state, and local elections. While many Republicans agree that Trump needs to be stopped, almost no one is willing to do it. With increasing divides among the Republican Party, how far do you think party leaders will go to stop Trump? If Trump does not win the Republican nomination, do you think he will run as a third party candidate?

  1. Scott Walker dropped out because he wanted to narrow down the field of Republican candidates so the people could focus their support on someone besides Trump. Now, because none of the remaining candidates want to risk getting attacked by Trump, they don't want to actively campaign against him. As a result, Trump won't be stopped, unless more candidates drop out of the race. If Trump isn't nominated, I don't think he will run as a third party candidate because I'm pretty sure I read an article on CNN a few months ago that said Trump had said he wouldn't run as a third party candidate.

  3. The article explains how Republican party leaders are at a standoff where everyone agrees Trump must be stopped, but no one wants to stand up to him and do it- he is an insulting, attacking, but powerful man with a crazy crowd rallying behind him. Lindsey Graham says how the damages will be "irreparable" if Trump gets the nominee, and I think the GOP definitely knows that. I think action will be taken, because the repercussions of a Trump nominee are too damaging for the Republican party to let go. I absolutely believe Trump will run independently if not given the nominee, which is equally as damaging to the GOP because it will split the Republican vote.

  4. I do think that Republican leaders will go as far as they need to to stop Trump but no farther. They have been trying to disassociate themselves from him but I believe they need to take more affirmative action. Yes I believe that Trump will run as a third party candidate if he does not receive the nomination as he wants the presidency really bad.

  5. I believe the Republicans are too divided aright now to bring Trump down. It is possible, however, because Republicans realize how a big a threat trump is to their party. Also, if Trump does end up parting ways with the party i do think he will run as an independent and still pose a possible top candidate.

  6. The Republican Party is not doing nearly enough to stop Trump. His constant disgraceful acts that have been broadcasted in the news represent the party in a completely negative light. Just when we thought he couldn't get any worse he continues to speak out recklessly. The Republican Party will not stop Trump and it will be too late to reverse his actions if he somehow becomes the republican nominee. Trump has nothing to lose in this case if he chooses to run as an independent. His head is too bloated to accept defeat so I would not be surprised if he ran as an independent.

  7. The Republican Party is not doing anything to stop Trump. They talk about it but no one will take action. Trump is not the type of person to accept defeat if not nominated and we will definitely see him run as an independent.

  8. The Republicans know that if Trump receives the nomination, he will not win. There are too many rational/moderate Republicans that aren't picked up in the polls. The issue is that Trump supporters are extremely vocal, and the attacks against Trump from within the party will be met with attacks in retaliation. The Party can only suffer. I don't believe that Trump will run as a third party candidate if he doesn't win the nomination; he may be irrational and eccentric, but he knows that dividing the Republican Party guarantees a Democratic victory.

  9. Trump poses an enormous threat to the GOP and the other candidates. As said, the candidates know this, but they fear counter-attacks. The current Republicans also tend to be somewhat indecisive as we saw with the Speaker of the House. If the Republicans do manage to build an alliance with which they use to act, then I do think Trump can be taken down, but until then, Trump will continue without being stopped. On the note of the third party, I do think there is a chance that he would run, but that would only devastate the GOP's chances in the election.

  10. Although I think most of us did not expect him to get this far, Trump has been a front runner of the Republican Party for much of the election season. His popularity poses serious threats to the GOP, as his winning the election would essentially make the Party look bad and would therefore make it very difficult for Republican Senate and House candidates to win reelection. Because of the threat, I think party leaders would go as far as they can to stop Trump, although there is much indecision, as no candidate wants to attack Trump with his large number of supporters. Until the GOP forms some kind of alliance against Trump, he will continue to top the polls and even win the primary.

I do think it is possible Donald Trump will run as a third-party candidate, considering his astounding popularity at the moment, if he does not win the Republican nomination. Although if he does not run for his own party, I feel he likely will not win the election.
