How Strong is America?

This article describes how national tragedies, like the Boston Bombings, unite this country. It then explains how we have the largest military in the world, and that there is nowhere on this earth were out enemies can hide yet we have some very serious domestic issues we need to solve.

It gives our gun control issue as an example of one of these fatal domestic problems. Tens of thousands of Americans die every year from gun violence, and yet our government cannot do anything about it. Whether you are in support of some form of gun control or not, it is clear that of government is not capable of fixing the problem.

I think this article makes a very good point. It is amazing that our country can put politics aside and act as Americans instead of Democrats and Republicans when we need it most. It is just a shame that people usually have to die before we unite in this way. We are considered the most powerful country in the world, the leader of the free world, and yet we cannot fix simple things that other countries do not even have to worry about. Do you think that we are as strong as we think we are?

  1. I agree with Sebastian. It is a shame that people have to die in order for our country to unite as one. Take 9/11 for example, thousands of people died and that united our Country together. I feel that we need to change gun control laws to make them safer. It's not taking them away (which may people believe will happen), it is just a change. I never understand why people freak out over this.

  2. However much we love our political process, institutions, and values, we cannot deny any longer that they have fatal flaws, many of them outlined by this article. Our fixation with "freedom," freedom from paying taxes, freedom to use guns, and freedom to do business without government regulation have led to policy decisions that have or will result in a massive loss of freedom for many. Political decisions being made today are denying my generation freedom from debt, freedom to live, and freedom to breathe clean air or drink clean water.

  3. We may not be able to fix certain things, but other countries also don't ever get the experience the great things we experience. Why must we always focus on the negative and never see the positive aspects of America? Just the fact that an article like that one can be written without backlash from the government goes to show how great our country is in comparison to other countries like China.

  4. I think Nora makes a great point that we shouldn't always focus on the negative. Every single country is going to have issues that are bigger there than in other countries. This does not mean that we should ignore them, but so long as we are working to fix it, eventually the solution will be found. I do think that it is fantastic that our country can come together in times of horrible tragedy, but shouldn't we be able to do that without the tragedy? I go back in forth with this because the nature of our system is to challenge and debate to get to the right solution.

  5. I think every country has its own problems. There are many problems we need to still fix in ours, but we are still a great nation, one that can be very patriotic and come together in times of tragedy. Like others have stated, we should spend time focusing on the good of our country and not always the bad.

  6. Our country has had its up and downs but either way we are always a strongly united country. It may seem that a tragedy is the only way to get everyone to act as humans instead of Democrats and Republicans but that isn't true. We see people do good deeds every day.

  7. All countries have their problems, but a country like ours is able to come together despite political or ideological beliefs and unite during tragedies or huge events, such as the Boston bombing.

  8. Nora makes a great point. We do live in a great county with amazing opportunities. Tragedies happen everywhere, but we are fortunate enough that we are able to overcome them and not constantly live in fear like some people do in other countries. America is a lot safer to live in than many other countries.
