Trump wins Nevada

Trump Wins Nevada

Donald Trump recently won the Nevada caucus by a wide margin. He continued his trend of blowing out the rest of the republican competition, carrying 46% of the delegates. Trump has been utilizing the anger shared by many young voters, especially republicans, to rally support and secure more votes. He's somewhat of a political outsider and his views are radical, so its been a surprise that he's been as successful as he has been. At this point, as much as GOP dislikes him, it's hard to see an outcome that doesn't involve Trump winning the republican nomination. Rubio and Cruz virtually tied for second in Nevada; however, it looks less and less like either of the two can be considered as plausible winners of the primary. Do you think that Trump should win the nomination? Why do you think Trump has been so successful in his campaign even given his radical ideology and lack of political experience.

  1. I don't think he should win the nomination, but he probably will. Political outsiders tend to do well in campaigns because a lot of people don't trust career politicians and want to see someone that they can trust in office. Trump has gained a large following of people that are angry with the government and want to see it fixed. He says things that a lot of people want to hear even though most of it is either false, racist, sexist, or impossible.

  2. I agree with Ryan - I wouldn't say Trump should win the Republican nomination, but at this point, it definitely seems like the most likely outcome. I think Trump's campaign has been so successful because he's not the only one frustrated with the governemnt - voters are, too. And, because Trump's an outsider, his supporters believe that his presidency will be different from his predecessors', and that he will make progress on issues important to them.

  3. Trump certainly shouldn't win the nomination but as he said even if he went onto Fifth Avenue and shot somebody, he wouldn't lose any supporters. He's been incredibly successful in reeling in a rather uneducated demographic that is sick of establishment politics. Trump is something different; as an outsider, he holds a lot of appeal. His voters believe that he is the only candidate who can represent them in Washington. People love someone who's not afraid to speak his mind.

  5. I do not think Trump should win the nomination, but there is a high chance of him doing so. A lot of his support comes from the fact that he is not a career politician. He appeals to the angry members of the electorate. He is willing to say what they want to hear, no matter how offensive it can be. Many people want a loud, angry "New Yorker" and Trump fits the bill.

  6. Trump looks unstoppable, having won almost every state so far. Unless the GOP establishment thinks of a way to prevent him from getting the nomination, it appears as if he will. Many people are attracted to Trump because they imagine the presidency to be something it's not. Of course, this is just my opinion, but I have a hunch most of Trump's supporters believe that a president without any regard for establishment or global political structure is just what the country needs, and the reason we haven't conquered the world yet is because Obama didn't yell enough. If Trump gets the nomination (and it's looking more and more like a "when"), I predict we will see historically low voter turnout in the general election on the Republican side.

  7. Trump will win the primary, I feel almost certain, because he has far too much support for anything else to happen. I don't want him to get the nomination, but that's looking like the outcome. I believe the Trump rallying has come from the Republican desire for a president unlike Obama, and someone who isn't afraid (at all) to preach his unpopular opinions. At this point, as Reince Priebus has even stated, it's too late; I don't predict the GOP being able to do anything.

  8. While I don't think that Trump's chances of winning are 100%, he certainly has the best chance at it. I think that his success comes precisely from the reason that he has radical ideology and a lack of political experience. People have been complaining about the government for a long time, so being able to claim the stance that he was not a part of that mess benefits him greatly. Also, his radicalism may be insane, but it is interesting and that will draw people in. Trump has been effectively playing the political system to the best of his abilities.

  9. I don't think Trump should win the nomination, but he may. And there is a large effort to stop him. Right now the Cruz campaign is pulling out every stop to suck up as many delegates as they can. Even though Trump is winning the vote, when it comes to the rules and Laws Cruz's campaign has been trying to stop and possibly get a brokered convention. So now this is a maybe, but i don't think that Trump deserves it, ethically. It is easy to be a demagogue, to point a finger and assign scapegoats. It is also not to hard to radicalize people who are upset. Who are victims, of, in this case, change. It is not easy, however, to lead, and I don't believe that Trump should get the nomination. After this shady back deal stuff Cruz is doing, I'm not sure that he is that much more of a moral option.
