Pope Says Trump 'Not Christian' in a Sign of Global Concern
Pope Francis made headlines yesterday after he criticized Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, calling Trump's position on immigration "not Christian." Trump then responded, saying that Pope Francis was "disgraceful" for questioning his faith. Trump has previously said that Mexico sends rapists and drug-runners in the United States and promises to build a wall to keep said people out of the country, at the expense of the Mexican government. Many have questioned if the Pope's comments will prove to be damaging or beneficial to Trump's campaign. 71 percent of Americans identify as Christian today, so they might side with the Pope. Do you think what the Pope said will hurt or help Trump? Also, do you think it was justified for the Pope to say what he said?

ReplyDeleteSo far, nothing has seemed to hurt Trump, and things that have traditionally hurt other candidates have only helped him. The Pope's comments don't appear to have hurt trump, as he just won the SC Primary with his usual large margin of victory. I do think the pope was justified in what he said. It was a fairly basic Christian principle and the Pope did not actually call out Trump by name.
ReplyDeleteI do not think the Pope's comments will hurt Trump at all. Trump still has a lot of support and has not lost any due to his extreme policy on immigration. Nothing has seemed to damage Trump's support. I think the Pope was right to question Trump's faith.
ReplyDeleteI don't think the Pope's comment will cost Trump any of his current supporters. However, I think it might discourage the supporters of other Republican candidates who have already dropped out of the primaries from switching to supporting Trump. I think the Pope's remarks were justified - he wanted to establish why he doesn't support Trump's campaign.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Julia in that Trump's supporters aren't going to think twice about the Pope's comments on his faith. Trump's supports are unwavering; however, I think the Pope's comment definitely shows the more rational-minded voters how Trump would be a terrible international representative for the U.S. Pope Francis isn't exactly an unreasonable man. Especially because his latest visits to the U.S., I think his comment was a nice boost to give people perspective of Trump's ludicrousy.

ReplyDeleteBecause Trump appeals to a more populist-oriented voter base, the remarks of a Catholic leader will not damage him; I believe most of his supporters are either Protestant or secular. Additionally, Trump returning fire will only strengthen his support, as many admire his confidence and detachment from any establishment organization. To most, Trump being at odds with a major world figure validates fears that a Trump presidency would alienate the United States, but to his supporters, an isolated country is just what they want.
ReplyDeleteThe Pope does wield influence, and this will most likely at least provoke thought in many minds. Even so, the Pope is not directly linked to the American government, so I doubt his message will have any kind of drastic effect. The Pope is a religious political figure, and he will make statements based on the ideology that he believes. While I do believe it is difficult to argue against the pope, he technically isn't a part of our politics, so his statements do not have that much ground.
