Jeb Bush's Doomed Campaign

Jeb Bush's Doomed Campaign

Now former US Presidential Candidate Jeb Bush has dropped out of the race, after admitting that 2016 was "simply not his year". He had shown poor results in polls over the past few months, but the New Hampshire primary had him coming in fourth and beating Marco Rubio- an encouraging triumph, but it wasn't enough to save his campaign. When Bush started to realize he wasn't going to be as big as he'd originally planned, he claimed "slow and steady wins the race", and was even known to hand out toy turtles to kids. Slow and steady didn't do it for Jeb, and we never would have anticipated this a year ago when Bush was an anticipated GOP front runner. What do you think killed his candidacy? Or was it doomed to begin with? Do you think his association with the Bush family had anything to do with it, even though Jeb stated several times during his campaign, "I am my own man"?

  1. I think Jeb's poor performance in debates hurt his campaign. Also, because he was an early front runner, his campaign faced attacks from Trump. For example, Trump labeled Jeb's campaign "low energy," and that label stuck. I think the fact that Jeb's a member of the Bush family also hurt his campaign. Many people are still angry at George W. Bush for the circumstances surrounding the Iraq war, and Jeb was frequently asked about his thoughts on the war. And, many people dislike the possibility of having another Bush vs. Clinton election.

  2. I agree with Julia, he may have been a strong candidate, but appeared weak in the debates, and his campaign went downhill when he could defend himself from Trump. In a smaller field of candidates, I think that Bush would have performed much better and possibly gotten the nomination. I do think his association with the Bush family also hurt his chances. In one of the early debates, he could name someone on his foreign affairs adviser list that was different than his brothers.

  3. Jeb's lackluster campaign has hurt him. The meaningless phrase "Jeb can fix it" of the campaign doesn't promise anything inspiring from him. I agree that his performance in debate and inability to stand up for himself has drastically hurt his chances in winning the nomination. I think Jeb is only hurting himself as he further casts himself in the shadows of his family.

  5. I think Jeb at one point had the potential to be a solid candidate. Jeb started to fall apart early in the race, due to his poor appearances in the debates. I also think his association with his family because many people do not want another Bush in the office.

  6. The anti-establishment mindset of the 2016 presdential race was not yet in full-swing when Jeb was declared the frontrunner. Unfortunately for him, he's the shining example of the Republican establishment and is easy to criticize for his brother's actions. Jeb didn't stand out enough, and was an early victim of Trump's ongoing crusade of insults. In this race even more than others before it, candidates needed (and still need) to stand out in some way. Jeb didn't stand out, and his dull campaign suffered.

  7. I think the large presence that Trump brought to his race killed his candidacy. He was the supposed frontrunner of the GOP, so he was supposed to be getting the attention, but Trump took that all away. I don't think his candidacy was doomed from the start, as I believe he would have had a relatively successful race if it hadn't been for Trump. While the Bush name may have brought some accumulated damage, I don't believe that the damage brought by the name was anything large or insurmountable.

  8. I do not think that Jeb! Bushes campaign was doomed form the beginning. Before Trump was even in the race the only thing that MSM were talking about was Bush, especially how he was taking forever to get in the race and soaking up all of the money. An that was another aspect of his early success, he had a lot of money, an did until the very end. It was Donald Trump who ended him. Bush was the boring option that your suppose to vote for because he knows what he is doing. Even with all the money and name recognition, he didn't have the hearts of the people and couldn't win. I don't even think it was his last name, just that he was a politician.
