Senate poised to pass budget deal

This article discussed the two year bipartisan budget deal that was recently passed by both the House and the Senate.  After the Senate voted to advance it on Tuesday, it is pretty much guaranteed for final passage. I found this article to be quite interesting because although the deal only covers one issue of the issues our nation faces today, it shows that the government is beginning to work together and make compromises.

  1. There was something very early on in the article that I liked. It said that the vote was 67-33, and that led me to thinking that at least a few people had to abandon party identities when voting for this. However, that was explained shortly thereafter when it was stated that 12 Republicans sided with the Democrats. Seeing this was good because it means that people in the Senate are more willing to work together and compromise to reach agreements.

  2. I really liked this article because as we've said many times in class, compromise is key. It's also refreshing to see Congress pass the bipartisan budget deal especially after the government shutdown. Hopefully, approval rating will go up as Congress can make more and more compromises and become more productive.

  3. This is a nice example of compromise in our government. My political views tend to be slanted one definitive way and therefore I am bothered by some aspects of this bill, but I recognize that it is a compromise- and that that is how our government is supposed to function, so I am happy that the bipartisan legislation will probably be passed.

  4. As everyone else has already stated, this article proves that there is hope for our country. One compromise has been reached so it is possible to reach more. Of course not everyone is happy, but at least on both sides of the aisle there are people who are happy. While it only resolves one issue for a little while, it does make the to-do list a little shorter.

  5. The fact that twelve Senate Republicans broke ranks to side and vote with the Democrats on ending the budget measure is definitely a good sign. We learned in class that out of the two parties the Democrats are the ones that are more likely to vote the other way, so this is a refreshing change to read about. Compromise is absolutely needed in Congress now more than ever so hopefully this is the first of many.

  6. I think this is a very good sign and hopefully the trend continues. Compromise is so desperately needed in our government today and this seems like a step in the right direction. Even though as we talked about in class that budgetary issues are much easier to compromise on than the social issues that seem to run politics today, it is still a good sign.

  7. It is very good to see that any compromise at all was able to be reached in Congress with the current state it is in. Although a true compromise will leave no one fully happy and with everything that they want, it is much better than having a stalemate and making no progress at all. Hopefully more Congress will be able to continue making more compromises in the future.

  8. Compromise isn't always the answer as we've seen in our nation's history (for example, the issue of slavery had to be faced eventually back in the 19th century.) However, in politics today we definitely don't have enough of it. The 67-33 demonstrates the positive effect of this bill: some people had to cross party lines, which is a reassuring sign for our country.

  9. This article does a nice job focusing on compromise. As we have discussed, compromise is the key to the productivity of our government. It is great to see well-respected members of the Republican Party, such as John McCain, willing to compromise. I think that trends/movements (in this case compromise) are most successful when they start with leaders.

  10. It is very encouraging to see that this budget deal was agreed on through a compromise. Our government does not compromise enough so it is good to see that it is possible for a Senate vote outcome to cross Republican and Democratic party lines

  11. My favorite part of the article was that the politicians themselves realized that neither party got exactly what they wanted. Instead, they met halfway to get this budget done. I hope to see this continue. Making progress just to go back to gridlock would be a shame.

  12. It's encouraging to see Washington make this huge step. I think now that the senate has agreed on this deal, as little or big as it is, it is compromise. Hopefully this has opened the eyes of the government officials in Washington and they will begin to make more compromises and get more things done.

  13. As we have said in class before in a compromise neither side gets exactly what they want. Obviously this compromise was the same. But the key was this was progress and things in Congress are finally getting done.

  14. Our government was founded with the hopes of compromise, yet it was practically built to gridlock. This century, particularly since Obama has been president, has seen an abundance or partisan politics. The increase of partisan politics, makes ordinary, moderate citizens choose between two ideological extremes, which only furthers polarization. The compromise seen in this article is a good step in the central direction.

  15. As i've said earlier bipartisan cooperation is encouraging, but cooperation for the sake of efficiency is not always the best course of action. Having not gone over the budget bill myself, i am unfit to give my own opinion on whether or not this was the right thing to do.

  16. I think that the bipartisan agreement is a good step for Congress, but it concerns me as to where our expectations have been set. I think it is alarming when the government needs to shut down when it can't perform one of its most basic tasks: budget. It worries me when i have to imagine congress trying to reform more complicated issues like immigration and foreign policy.

  17. It's really cool to see some compromising politics. I honestly don't think I've ever really seen much of it like while I've been alive and politcally attentive, so just seeing an actual compromise is sort of interesting to me. It's definitely good that the kind of debate we've been obsessed with is finally over, though.

  18. Wow! Actual compromise! It's refreshing to see both parties work together to get something major done. However, as we have learned, nobody gets exactly what they want in a compromise. Hopefully the budget deal that was passed was the best for our country.
