Democrats not named Clinton also eye presidential bids

This article addresses possible Democratic candidates who have thought about running for President in 2016. The article highlights five candidates; Joe Biden, Andrew Cuomo, Amy Klobuchar, Martin O'Malley, and Brian Schweitzer. Before I read the article, I had only heard of two of the possible candidates. And the article mentions that even though the candidates may not win, some would like to use the 2016 election as a way to get their name out there. Do you think that any of these new possible opponents can compete with Hillary Clinton? Do you think that Clinton will even run in 2016?

  1. I don't know if Hillary Clinton will run, but if she decides to, it sounds like it would automatically knock her fiercest competitor out of the race. For Andrew Cuomo it is just an unfortunate coincidence that Hillary is also from New York. As far as the other candidates, I don't think Biden could win because I don't think the country views him as a very presidential person. What I mean by that is that he often seems like a lose cannon with little to no filter.

  2. "If you're really interested in doing it and you have an idea about where you want to take the country, you should probably get started.'' This is a good summary of what people should think of before running for presidency. Hillary Clinton definitely is interested and knows what to do with her experience. Although Hillary might beat Andrew Cuomo, I believe he should try. There is no point in bowing down to someone who has yet to prove their superiority. He should run and then duke it out in the primary election. If he REALLY wants to be the president, he should be more concerned about the issues and country and less about competition.

  3. Personally I think it is a little early for speculation about the 2016 election. That is two years away. Still, Evan has a good point. If Hilary does run then Cuomo would have a much more difficult time. I really hope Hillary Clinton runs. I think she is great. Team Hillary Here!!!

  4. To even start thinking about the next presidential election in 2016 is an almost crazy idea, but this article discusses the Democratic candidates already setting out their bids for the next presidency. Unsurprisingly, most of the names on the list are basically unheard of to me personally although they have a huge obstacle in the Hilary campaign. I would chose Hilary for the big win for the Democrats.

  5. It seems that the next Democratic presidential candidate really relies on whether or not Hillary Clinton will run. Obama beat Hillary so I don't understand why it seems impossible for other people to run against her. I haven't heard of a couple of these people and the article said that three years before the election they should be making some moves to get public recognition, maybe Hillary is playing a game with them.

  6. I think that the idea of running a primary campaign against Hilary Clinton seems very daunting to many of the other possible candidates. She is very well known, while some of the others are not. If she decides to run in 2016 I think it would be difficult but not impossible for someone else to beat her and win the nomination.

  7. The fact that it's this soon before the next presidential election and there are this many possible candidates dropping big hints about running is surprising, but goes along with everything we've learned in class. If Hillary decides to run, she obviously has the best chance at winning the primary, but I like how the article also added that it wouldn't be the worst idea for other people to still run. It not only makes a name for themselves for the next election, but gives them the opportunity to be a running mate for the current one.

  8. This article seems to indicate that there really are only two close compeptiors for Clinton in 2016, if she runs: Biden and Cuomo. However, she could very easily eliminate Cuomo because they're both from the same state, and if anything else goes wrong with the Obama administration, it would be tough for Biden to have a successful bid for president. It seems that in all likelihood, Hillary Clinton will have a very easy bid for president if she runs in 2016

  9. Hillary clearly has the best chance in the primary, but that's not to say others shouldn't run. With this said, the Democratic Party I believe would benefit most with Clinton running, for she is already well-known, well-liked, and has the most experience.

  10. I think that it probably just wouldn't be sensible for others to run if Hilary was as well. She has so much experience and is so well known it would be near impossible for anyone to challenge her in 2016.

  11. I am surprised to see how many potential candidates there already are for the 2016 election. Hilary Clinton really has all the power in the situation everyone is waiting to see whether or not she will run. I think she would have a fairly easy time winning the primary due largely to how recognizable her name is. I'm with Michaela on Team Hilary, and I really hope she runs!

  12. I believe that Joe Biden would have the largest obstacles to overcome if he were to decide to run for president. I feel this way because I think Americans will always be reminded of Obama when they hear the name Biden. This isn't a good thing considering Obama's poor approval rating from people of both parties due to Obamacare's website. I do believe that Hillary would have the easiest time rising as the Democratic candidate, but that does not mean it is a lock. We're still three years out from this election. Three years is a lot of time for things to go wrong.

  13. The layout of this article was interesting in how it highlighted the strengths and weaknesses of each potential candidate. One of the things that stuck out to me was Biden's “con.” As Josh pointed out, “We're still three years out from this election. Three years is a lot of time for things to go wrong.” I completely agree at this point in the game. We've even seen several articles that presented the dropping approval rate of the president.

  14. I think Hilary should definitely run in 2016. But in reality 2016 is a long time away and sometimes it is best just to focus on this issues at hand. But it's never too early to talk about the Presidential race because it is a huge deal. In reality I'm not sure if the other Democrats have a chance but three years can change a lot.

  15. There's something to be said about political families. On the one hand it seems like it diminishes democracy because people like the Bush's and the Clinton's have an advantage over other competitors due to the people's recognition of their name. But it also may give the candidate more experience and wisdom due to their families involvement in politics, and thus they might be the best person for the job.

  16. I think that a few of the Democratic contenders look hopeful, especially Cuomo. Although, i think all of them fall short of Clinton and it would be best if she ran. To have the first ethnic president and then the first female president in a row would be great for America, especially in the realm of foreign policy. If Clinton were to run, i would hope that she places the same amount of emphasis on economic reform that her husband did.
