Stakes get higher in upcoming Biden-Ryan debate

After Mitt Romney's win in last week's presidential debate, the stage is now set for a debate between Vice President Joe Biden and Mitt Romney running mate Paul Ryan. Following the presidential debate the pressure is now put on Joe Biden to really go at the Romney-Ryan campaign in an attempt to halt the momentum from Romney's victory. His opponet Ron Paul is up for one serious debate, especially with all of the experience that Mr. Biden has over the years as a great orator in his political career. Although Biden is prone to gaffes, the engery and tenacity that he will have Thursday night will be at very high levels. I believe that Joe Biden understands the expectations of him at the debate and due to his experience will overpower Ron Paul. This is wher Biden shines and it would be a real blow to the Obama campaign if he were to fail in his duty at this debate.

  1. Uh... you mean Paul Ryan ;) I agree with you, Joe Biden will come out with guns a'blazin' and try to throw everything he can at Ryan in this debate. The first debate was a serious setback for President Obama, and polls are showing a tightening race. I think Biden's experience but also his sense of humor will help him portray a stark contrast with his younger rival. However, he has to be careful not to put his foot in his mouth, he has a history of making controversial comments and no doubt the Obama team will be very nervous until the final bell sounds to end this debate.

    1. My mistake. I'll put the blame on auto correct or the fact that it was late whichever one sounds better.

  2. I agree with Adam and Mr. Danson. With the race tightening, it is very important for Biden to have a good show today. Biden can have his good and bad days when speaking and tonight has to be a good day. Ryan is young and energetic, I wouldn't be surprised if he "wins" the debate by how he portrays himself and how speak instead of what he says.

  3. Hey ummmm Mr. Danson Adam made the slip-up not me :-). It's okay though I forgive you for that joke! Just a bit of fun.

  4. I would also agree that last weeks debate added importance to this debate for the Democratic ticket. Biden just has to make sure that an hour and a half of solid personable speaking isn't overshadowed by a single gaff that gives the 24 hour media a chance to overplay the sound clip of and blow out of proportion.

  5. I agree that it is important for Biden to overpower Ryan in the debate because these debates have influence on voters view points. I agree and think that Biden has the potential and experience to over-shine Ryan because of his experience from his political career.

  6. Let's get ready to rumble with the VP debate on its way. Biden really needs to stand strong and not have ANY flukes or slip ups. That being said, I don't think it's gonna happen. Ryan is an extremely strong candidate and really knows what he's talking about, whereas I just don't see Biden being the hero he needs to be.

  7. I agree with everyone who says that this vice presidential debate is important. As we saw in class, the polls are showing the race is getting closer and closer after the Presidential debate. If Biden has a good showing tonight he will probably make the gap in the polls larger. If Ryan has a good showing, the election in my opinion will become even closer. I really think that this debate will help to influence a voter because I know many people are uncertain of who they are voting for.The last debate obviously had an influence.

  8. After Romney's "victory" last week, it's clearly crucial for Biden to really step up his game. Paul Ryan won't be holding back so neither can Biden. However, we all know how Biden can get if he really doesn't hold back! This could be a pivotal debate considering the narrowing of the race. Biden knows it, so hopefully he can go all out without slipping up!

  9. I agree that Biden needs to make a good showing in this debate. It seems as though both candidates are very prepared, and I am looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

  10. Despite Biden's experience, I believe Ryan presents a much stronger image entering the debate. To me, Biden's history of speaking gaffes (the most poignant in my mind is when he proudly declared- and defended- the idea that "We have to spend money to keep from going bankrupt." Think about that one.) and even his mannerisms of speaking make him sound much less persuasive and erudite in the areas he's speaking on. On the other hand, Ryan is an expert in budget statistics, and if Romney's performance is any indication, well-groomed to answer questions. As long as Ryan manages to stick with Romney's vision and establish that they stand in solidarity, and tries not to offend seniors, I think he stands a very good chance of winning the debate.

  11. I'm not really good at judging debates or anything, but I think Biden, at least at the beginning when I was paying good attention, started strong. He seemed very confident and looked good. He needed to do it to make up for last debate, and at the end we'll see who comes out on top. Also, I hate their little smirks and laughs they had.

  12. Bryan, I feel the same way. I cannot judge a debate for the life of me and the smirks/laughs were beyond irritating. Thankfully, Biden seemed much more prepared than Obama had been, from what I saw at the beginning of the debate. Having two prepared speakers makes for a much more interesting debate. If Biden can come out strong and stay strong then he may save Obama from his previously terrible debate but if Biden chokes just as Obama did then the gap will only get smaller between the two, leaving us voters in suspense for the turnout of this election.

  13. With the impact that the last debate had in the polls I think that it was very important that Biden perform well tonight. Biden seemed prepared and experienced (from what I saw). However, in the past, the VP debates have had little effect on the actual election and, despite Biden's ability to "rise to the challenge", this debate will probably continue that trend.

  14. Tonight's debate will definitely influence voters. After all, many of them base their opinions of the vice president entirely off of this debate. From what I know about tonight's debate as of now, Biden seemed more focused than Obama, delivering his points fairly effectively. Ryan may polarize voters, but he certainly has a financial track record. The question is, will voters agree with his decisions and viewpoints? I personally am still rubbed the wrong way by the fact that Romney and Ryan differ on so many issues. Yes, Ryan has said he defers to Romney as far as the campaign is concerned, but I think Obama and Biden are more on the same page. I will be interested to see how tonight's debate affects polls.

  15. It was interesting to compare the predictions made by the pre-debate article while actually watching the debate. One could see Biden "unleash his inner attack dog" during the VP debate that was anticipated in the selected article, but this could be seen from different points of view. One could say that Biden was too aggressive, while others could commend him for seeming on the offense rather than the defense, which was the complaint towards Obama in the previous presidential debate.

  16. There was a lot at stake tonight for each vice presidential candidate. A big topic leading up to the debate was whether the vice president would have any of the vocal slip-ups that have been accredited to him in the past. In fact, Ryan even called Biden out by suggesting that Biden's words don't always come out the way he wants them to. In response, Biden said, "But I always say what I mean." Needless to say, Biden was fairly careful with his words tonight. For people anticipating a moment of comedic relief from Biden during this intense debate, they were surely disappointed.
