Millennials Go for Clinton
This article is about how Hillary Clinton has been appealing to millennials, especially since the first debate. It discusses how hard Clinton's campaign has worked to appeal to this age group. The article includes quotes from a lot of students about what it is about Clinton that has caused them to support her. Factors such as her toughness, confidence, focus on family issues, and lack of tolerance towards Donald Trump are all cited as appealing qualities about Clinton. It's clear that Clinton will never have the same response from millennials as Obama or Sanders, but what she has now should be enough for her to secure the vote from this demographic. Do you agree with the quote from Clinton's campaign manager that "Secretary Clinton is going to win this campaign because of millennial voters"? A lot of the people in the article were former Sanders supporters. How much of an impact do you think Sanders' endorsement of Clinton has had on the amount of millennials who now support her?

I do agree with Clinton's campaign manager's quote; while during the primary elections, young Democrats flocked to Bernie Sanders, it seems that Clinton's young voter base has grown over the course of the campaign. Many millennials are attracted by her plans to increase minimum wage and reduce the costs of college, and her methods of dealing with Trump have made her even more relatable. While some of her attempts to be more accessible to millennials have fallen short and even been a little bit cringe-inducing, such as one tweet she made, saying "How does your student loan debt make you feel? Tell us in 3 emojis or less," she has generally been becoming increasingly supported by millennials, especially following Bernie's endorsement of her.
ReplyDeleteMillennials clearly preferred Bernie to Hillary, but once it was clear that Bernie was no longer a contender the Bernie supporters that are able to take a step back and see the big picture shifted their support to Hillary. Bernie himself could see the big picture, as was made clear by his endorsement. A democratic president is better than a republican president, and almost literally anyone is better suited for presidency than Trump. The Bernie supporters that switched to Hillary even if it was because she's the "lesser of two evils" have a far better sense of perspective than the Bernie or Bust followers that are supporting a dead campaign when a live one needs their help.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Bernie's endorsement had a significant impact on millennial voters. By telling them to vote for Clinton, he may have influenced a large amount of young voters to vote for the democratic nominee rather than splitting the vote or, although unlikely, voting for Trump. I think that Clinton's base of young voters has grown significantly, which will certainly benefit her come election day. Millennials largely prefer Bernie to Hillary, but young voters see the importance of voting for Hillary, the nominee, to avoid a Trump presidency.
ReplyDeleteBernie's endorsement of Clinton has a significant impact on the amount of millennial voters Clinton will have in this election. At the end of the article, one of the students said that Bernie seemed the the most genuine and honest candidate in this election. Bernie's endorsement of Clinton has shown his supporters that he believes Clinton is honest and because he supports him, the millennials do too. I also think that millennial support for Clinton has grown because so many bad things have been revealed about Trump, that the only viable option for president is Clinton.
ReplyDeleteI agree that Clinton's millennial support will win her the election. While many millennials were completely fixed on Bernie initially, Bernie's endorsement of Clinton in the name of party unity had a great impact on her millennial support. Since her winning of the primary, Clinton has worked on appealing to millennials. I think that this, along with Trump's conservative views, will win Clinton the majority of millennials, who generally lean towards the liberal side.
ReplyDeleteI definitely honk that Clinton is winning over the millennials, democratic views tend to run through younger ages. But, with the Bernie supporters, she can probably pull through. Him endorsing Clinton was a huge step and he may have lost a good amount of supporters but she definitely gained a good amount of supporters as well. Trumps conservative views aren't going to be as relatable to the younger voters. The only thing is getting young people to actually go out and vote, not just support.

ReplyDeleteI think that literally speaking, yes, Clinton will likely win the election due to millennial voters. More significantly though, the millennials are less motivated by her campaign than by Sanders. Still, his endorsement will likely have boosted her polling a few critical percentage points by showing Sanders' millennial supporters that she is the candidate most likely to enact parts of his agenda. Additionally, Clinton is also likely to have a edge over Trump due to her being a Democrat and advocating some views popular amongst millennials. This, along with Sanders will definelty be a significant boost during the election.
ReplyDeleteSecretary Clinton's millennial support will be essential on Election Day if she is to win. Senator Sanders's millennial base is truly incredible, but many of them are skeptical of the Democratic nominee. A lot of young people feel discouraged by Senator Sanders's failure to win the primary and may not vote at all. The biggest motivator for many millennials is the fear of Mr. Trump winning, and I think the Democrats are doing everything they can to capitalize on this common enemy.
ReplyDeleteMillenial voters play a huge part in the Clinton campaign. I think that young people really did like Sanders a lot because he's ambitious and a likable guy. Young people are also more likely to be Democrats, so I think that's also a reason why people so willingly switched from Sanders to Clinton when he was out of the race, because they wanted a Democrat as president. It probably did help that Sanders ended up giving his support, though. Also, I think a lot of people are really against Donald Trump so therefore for Hillary Clinton. It doesn't seem like many people are crazy about Clinton, but she's definitely warming up to people after all of this stuff with Trump, her great performances in the debates, and the efforts to humanize her.
ReplyDeleteI don't think the millennials are going to be the sole reason that Clinton wins thus election. Young people are generally more democratic than older people, so their vote is already kind of guaranteed to sway towards the Democratic Party. For most Bernie-supporting mellenials, his support of Clinton may not be that persuading. It kind of appears that he's just giving into the party's wishes, and a lot of his supporters appreciated the fact that he fought for what he believed in. In general, the young people are important for Clinton's elections, but no more so than they would be in any other election.
ReplyDeleteI feel as though all of the millennials will vote for Hillary because most tend to be more on the Democratic side, and don't want to vote for Trump. While Hillary might not be as loved by millennials than Bernie, she is a better candidate than Trump.
ReplyDeleteI definitely think that Hillary's millennial base will be extremely important on election day. I feel as though she did extremely poorly with millennials in the primary because most of them went for Sanders, but I think it's hopeful that they'll come around.
ReplyDeleteI feel that while many of the Sanders folks were pretty bent on getting him into the nomination, the fact that a lot of the people that have previously supported him have now shifted their support over to her not only speaks to his willingness to endorse her, but also the Sanders people to work within the system(Which may or may not be a bad thing). I think this does confirm the quote from the Clinton Campaign Manager.
ReplyDeleteI feel that while Sander's endorsement is definitely responsible for swinging people's votes towards Hillary, he isn't the only factor responsible. While Hillary as a candidate might not appeal to the average millennial as much as Sanders might have, she definitely would appeal more than Trump might (for a majority of this voter base), and this is why she will have increased numbers from this campaign. While her efforts (as Ben said) sometimes haven't always been the best received, it's the intent that matters, and I would think that if not for agreeing with her policies in the first place, her efforts to relate to the millennial age group will have far greater influence than those of Trump's campaign, who, to my experience, have spent little effort appealing to the millennial generation at all. I'm getting the feeling that due to the potential threat that Trump brings with his volatile personality, many millennials will be motivated through fear or disgust to vote against Trump, and most likely look towards Hillary as a result.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Ryan, if Hillary Clinton is to win, I believe her support from millennials will play a significant role. Many millennials favored Bernie to Hillary, and considering most of them despise Trump, they will side with Hillary on election day.
ReplyDeleteI think if it wasn't for Bernie, Hillary wouldn't be AS successful with the millennial votes as she is. Obviously we know see that she did not win the election, but I do think the millennial votes helped her win the popular vote. If you were to look at a demographic map of the millennials that voted, almost the entire country lights up blue.
ReplyDeleteHillary ran the table with millennial voters on November 8th. She got something lime 503 electoral college votes if only millennials were counted. That makes me so happy. Once all of the racist old people die off, America can get back to being the catalyst for innovation and progress that we once were. Wow, that makes me sound like Trump a little bit. "Make America Innovative Again!"
ReplyDeleteThe millennial a will be a huge help come Election Day for Hillary. I truly believe she will win majority of young voters vote, over Trump. The turnout for her and millennial may not have been positive in the primaries, but that's because the young voters favored Samnders. Though most millennial did not favor Hillary over Sanders, they all seem to agree on one thing, despising Trump. So come Election Day, those millennial so who supported Sanders with swing their vote over to Hillary, rather than Trump.
ReplyDeleteIts a really great thing to see that the millenials are the ones with the most knowledge in this country. It made me very happy knowing that if it was only young voters voting, that Hillary would have won with over 500 Electoral College votes. It will be interesting to see how future elections to come turn out.
