Paul Ryan, Mitch McConnell call out Trump on KKK

Paul Ryan, Mitch McConnell call out Trump on KKK

Speaker of the House Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell have both condemned Donald Trump's failure to speak out against David Duke and the Ku Klux Klan in reference to their support of him. However, Donald Trump has claimed that technical issues resulted in him not being able to hear what his interviewer was talking about when the issue was brought up. Do you think this controversy will hurt Donald Trump (either in the primaries or the general election)? Also, do you think that it makes a difference that Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell have spoken out against Trump in this instance? Or does this just play to Trump's strength among those who see him as an "outsider"?

  1. This controversy probably won't hurt Donald Trump at all. His followers are all blind to all the negative things he says, and they would probably believe his excuse that a bad earpiece prevented him from denouncing David Duke and the KKK. Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell's statements against Trump may have some effect on voters who are on the fence for supporting him, and bring them off Trump's side to a more moderate candidate like Rubio. However, their statements will probably have no effect on firm Trump supporters.

  2. I don't think all this will hurt Donald Trump. All this controversy is all just a distraction; his supporters are all blinded by the negative things he says anyways. So they would believe his excuse for having a bad earpiece to prevent him from speaking out against David Duke and the KKK. I think Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell did make an effect on voters when they spoke out against Trump, but only the ones who are on the fence about voting for Trump. Their statements probably wouldn't have much of an effect on the people that fully support Trump. But nevertheless, I think their statements did have some sort of effect.

  3. I think Trump is so far out of line at this point that any mistake big or small that he makes is just another ripple in the huge pool of his errors and statements that shock, disappoint, and offend Americans. I think it's definitely a powerful statement that both the Speaker of the House and the Senate Majority Leader have (rightly so) rebuked Trump for not taking action. I think it shows just how much Republican legislatures are against him. I think their statements had an effect on people who weren't sure who they'd support, but avid Trump supporters probably weren't affected by this at all.

  4. I have to agree that, sadly, this won't have any huge effect on Trump's supporters. It even has the potential to increase hi base, although I doubt that. I would like to think that Trump is running out of people to appeal to and that everyone else is just too split, but as the race gets farther and farther along, I'm getting more and more concerned that he has a chance. I think that his supporters will believe anything that he says because they blindly follow him anywhere. I'm glad that the Republicans are speaking out against him, but I am also slightly disappointed that Ryan plans to back the nominee. I would have hoped that his dedication to his country's wellbeing was stringer than his dedication to his party.

  5. I also don't think this will hurt Trump for either election. At this point, people who support Trump will probably continue to support him no matter what he says or does.
Ryan and McConnell speaking out against Trump just shows that Republican Party leaders are also against him.

  6. Even though this issue was a big deal at the time, it is simply just another media explosion about Donald Trump. A month later, it is old news and there seems to be no concerns about what Trump's views on the KKK actually are. The media is updating so quickly that issues and events that should become big news and debated over quickly become old news and are left in the past. I feel that if the media only had one or two chances to update the public a week, there would be a bigger chance of the important issues breaking through.

  7. Trump is controversial and dramatic, people either hate him or love him. Many of the “new” propositions he comes up with don’t sway people very much in their opinion of him. All of this aside, the issue with David Duke and his organization is very important and in a rare occasion an issue Trump cant sway. This is an issue that he might not be able to keep from causing potential massive disapproval. Being supported by a racist and overall violent organization will cause major backlash unless he somehow comes out and fully denies accepting any support from people like that. People like Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan will help to further worsen Trump’s position. Trump is in a very bad spot and I for one in an un biased opinion believe that it could potentially be his down fall, and ultimately ruin his entire campaign.

  8. People looking at this issue are going to see exactly what they want to. Trump supporters will see Donald Trump being attacked by the political elite over a mistake made by the moderators. On the other hand, people who don't support Trump will see a man who refused to speak out against David Duke. This will result in essentially no change in Trump's numbers as the people who love him will continue to love him and the people who don't won't suddenly support him. Paul Ryan, etc. were in the right speaking out against Donald Trump but that might do more damage to their brand than had they not said anything. It comes across as a desperate ploy to hurt Trump.

  9. Sadly, Trump’s supporters will support him no matter what he says or does. Maybe he lost a very small percentage of supporters, but I doubt his statements (or lack thereof) hurt him in any way. I also doubt that Ryan and McConnell speaking out against Trump hurt him at all either. As Talia said, no one is talking about this now. It is old news. Trump gets so much news coverage that we hear ridiculous stories about him pretty much every day, so people don’t really much pay attention after time has passed. If people support Trump, they will not stop supporting him because of this, and if people do not support him, they will continue to not support him even more.
