Mitt Romney Calls Donald Trump 'A Phony, A Fraud'; Trump Hits Back

Mitt Romney is the latest Republican to criticize Donald Trump and question his fitness to be president. He called him a fraud, a phony, and a con artist. Romney also called into question Trump's economic plans, saying that his ideas to restore American jobs from offshore is "flimsy at best." In typical style, Trump retaliated soon after with name calling. He ridiculed Romney as a "choke artist." Trump also said that Romney ran "one of the worst campaigns in the history of politics." Do you think that Romney's stance will hurt Trump in the polls and the next primaries? Is Romney bucking to be a late-stage candidate? Is this a last ditch effort by the Stop Trump movement in the GOP establishment to set back Trump's momentum?

  1. I don't think Romney's attacks on Trump will actually hurt Trump's campaign. Anyone who still supports Trump at this point will most likely continue to support Trump, regardless of what Romney or other Republicans say. I also don't think Romney is hoping to become a presidential candidate. That would only make nominating someone besides Trump more difficult because then there would be four, not three, other Republican presidential candidates to vote for, and each would be less likely to receive a majority of the votes and beat Trump. So, Romney's attacks on Trump are just another sign of the GOP's growing desperation to prevent Trump from becoming the Republican presidential nominee.

  2. Like any attacks on Trump's campaign, they do not have any effect on the blind supporters. The GOP is struggling to figure out how to control Trump and this seems to be their way of showing their disapproval for the candidate. Romney's criticisms seem genuine as he is tries to piece together whatever is left of the true Republican party. I don't think he's looking for a late-stage joining I think it's just another meaningless effort to slow down the Trump momentum.

  3. Romney's comments on Trump will hurt his standing among Republicans who are on the fence in terms of siding with a particular candidate. There were reports some time ago that Romney had quietly activated his campaigns, so it is possible Romney will come back to run in this election. This is most certainly an attempt to stop Trump's momentum. Seeing that many establishment Republicans are saying they will not vote for Trump, any dig they can get on Trump they see as an opprotunity to stop a Trump nomination from occurring.

  4. Romney's stance will not hurt Trump at all. Nothing has hurt Trump. I find it highly unlikely that Romney will emerge as a candidate. It's very late in the race and adding a candidate will only divide the votes against Trump even more.

  5. The Republicans that support Trump are not the same Republicans that would listen to Mitt Romney. The Republican establishment is trying everything it can to speak out against Trump, but will be stuck supporting him come summer. There's really nothing they can do to stop him now. Romney speaking out against him is just adding to the opposition, fueling the passion of Trump's supporters. Trump supported Romney, and spoke about their friendship, in 2012. It is interesting that he insults him now.

  6. I doubt Romney's attacks will do anything to Trump's campaign, except maybe rally a bit of Romney support from the Anti-Trumpers. I've heard talk of Republicans wanting a third candidate (like Romney) to step in, but I don't think he has any intent nor will it happen.

  7. I think that Romney's stance will do some damage, but not to an extent that it will drastically affect Trump's campaign. I don't believe that Romney will join the race, especially this late. The GOP has been attempting to stop Trump ever since his candidacy became more than a joke. I don't think the GOP will stop attempting to stop Trump's progress until the primaries are over.

  8. I thought and it has been shown that it did do some damage, at least in Utah. The fact that he is a Mormon and the high demographic of them in Utah and then Trumps push back against Romney spelled trouble during the primary. I would also like to point out that this may indeed be a flag from the GOP that is saying they are in trouble and are pulling out the heavy hitters.
