Ted Cruz Spins Shutdown as a Success

Well I realize that this article is very brief, but I saw the title and knew I had to post it. The title really says it all: according to Cruz, the government shutdown was a "success" because the public recognized it as a failure and therefore had quite a bit of heated discussion about it. So I'm curious, based on the other articles about the government shutdown and what you know about Tea Party member Ted Cruz, what do you think? Even if the issue "got people talking," can this really be considered a relative success to the corrupt U.S politics we know today?

  1. How can Mr. Cruz look people in the eye and honestly describe this crisis as a success when it cost the country billions and furloughed so many workers? How do people like him even get elected? It's so selfish of him to look at the shutdown as a success just because it possibly benefitted him and the republicans when it hurt so many more than that.

  2. This is....interesting to say the very least. I don't quite understand how you can call something that caused to people to lose pay and have their jobs furloughed a success. I guess his argument does make sense in the way that it did get people to start talking about the shutdown, but it also doesn't make sense because the shutdown was terrible for the country because it cost us a ton of money and it even put some people out of work for a little bit.

  3. I don't understand how Cruz can call the shutdown a success. One of his main goals of the shutdown was to cut funding for Obamacare so that the program would not be able to be put into place. As the article says, this goal was not met. Therefore the shutdown just caused so many government workers to be furloughed and cost the economy billions of dollars, neither of which should be considered a success.

  4. I don't understand how some elected officials can be so close-minded. I find it very discouraging that even after Senator Cruz saw the ill effects of the government shutdown he still finds it appropriate to call it a success. I think Senator Cruz needs to focus his efforts on other issues and leave Obamacare alone.

  5. I "love" that he sees this from the one side. OK people did talk but that was only because it was a national disaster. It was not a good thing overall. There was a commentor on the article itself who was obviously furious and quoted the constitution, in article I section 8, the country is supposed to RAISE revenue, which is a really good point. The reason it was resolved was because the nation was approaching the debt ceiling.

  7. This is ridiculous. Other than Sarah Palins tweets, the only discussion that I heard after the government shutdown was about the utterly embarrassing breakdown in government. I think that Cruz is only trying to spin this into a positive light in an attempt to cover for his antics during the shutdown. It is just ignorant for Cruz to call a shutdown that caused people to be furloughed and that caused important programs to be shutdown a success.

  8. Cruz stated that the government shutdown was a triumph because it got Americans involved in the debate over Obamacare, but aren't there better ways to get people talking? One that doesn't involve an extreme loss of revenue and jobs would have definitely been preferable. It seems like all of this "talk" was more about the controversy over the shutdown itself and less about the details over the debate. Either way, I don't think there's any possible way that someone from either political party could call it a success.

  9. I don't understand how the shutdown can be taken as a success. The country lost a ridiculous amount of money. We also lost respect from nearly every country around the world. Ted also "vowed to block" the healthcare law. That did not happen. At all. From reading Green Eggs and Ham to this, Ted Cruz has definitely lost some respect in the political world.

  10. So completely ridiculous!! I really can't see how anyone could think that coming within hours of global economic turmoil and disaster could be a good thing. Cruz is obviously still trying to further his campaign, and it's pathetic. What he is doing/has done is not in any way shape or form representing or helping the people who elected him. Hopefully this will end, not further, his political career.

  11. By this point, I'm not really surprised that Senator Cruz would say something like this. Clearly, he was trying to make the best out of the horrible situation so that he could suck some more money out the the rich people attending the fundraising dinner. It's kind of pathetic that he basically lied to about 600 people just to make sure that his money wasn't going anywhere.

  12. I think it is very selfish and a slap in the face to the American people to call the recent shutdown a success. Many people were out of a job for a few weeks due to our government's dysfunction. I would advise Mr. Cruz to stop talking about this still-sore issue and start focusing on more pressing matters.

  13. I am not surprised the Mr. Cruz would call this a success. As one of the main catalysts of the shutdown, he most likely fears being seen as one who does not stand by his actions, regardless of what those actions are.

  14. Ted Cruz might just be insane. He is a prime example supporting Mike Lofgren's argument that Republicans are going crazy. There is no way that this shut down could possible be a "success". This just makes Cruz look even worse than he did before. I'm so baffled by this, I do not even know whether to get angry at his insanity or just laugh at his in-denial.

  15. Ted Cruz is what's wrong with the Republican Party. How is the shutdown a success? People lost even more trust in government, and it made the US look weaker in the eyes of other nations. Hopefully Cruz will continue to lose popularity and make an even bigger fool of himself, and his career in government will end.

  16. It seems to me that Mr. Cruz should step out of the spotlight for a few weeks. Before a month or two ago I had no clue who he was. After his 16 hour rant I have heard his name in the news every day. They say that any press is good press. I do not beleive that is true in the case of Ted Cruz, especially if the rumors about him running for president in 2016 are true.
