Democrats Aim to Restore Immigration to Agenda

With the government shutdown, President Barack Obama and other Democrats were fast to bring up the topic of immigration. A bill may be difficult to pass, however, as some of the GOP is still mad over the small gains they made in the two weeks of government shutdown. Representatives from both parties believe that passing a broad immigration bill could improve the public's opinion on the Republican party. Speaker of the House John Boehner has set a goal to make improvements on America's broken immigration system by the end of the year. Many Democrats are calling for Mr. Boehner to allow a vote such as the one in the Senate that ended the government shutdown. This type of vote passes legislation with both Democratic and Republican votes.

  1. This article definitely shows that we are starting to make some headway in government again (after the recent shutdown). It is good to hear that there is the potential for compromise and progress on the topic of immigration reform. I feel that the government shutdown was a real low for our country, but I hope that this recent discussion is just the begging of a whole lot of improvement in the government.

  2. It is good to finally have the government shutdown over. We can all agree on that. It is also good to see that people are trying to move on with politics. It is important to learn from our mistakes and make sure they do not happen in the future. Whether or not you agree with the immigration policies, it is beneficial to have something happening at the capital.

  3. If it wasn't going to happen in a short amount of time at least it happened at all, we are finally out of the shutdown that has kept any real work from happening. They have moved from the problems that have kept us shutdown to the issues of immigration, which has been a touchy subject for quite awhile between the two parties. Many have arguments for and against most of the policies that are being voted on when it comes to immigration but it is always up for discussion on what approach to take.

  4. Well it isn't much progress I have to admit. At least, though, by bringing up the issue of immigration, we are a step up from where we were a few weeks ago during the shutdown. I'd like to highlight what Xavier Beccerra said in the article, “I'm more optimistic because what prevailed at the end of this Republican shutdown and potential default was a clear message that this is not how you run government.” Optimism isn't quite accurate, but hopefully government officials can learn from this experience. The two parties need to work with each other towards a compromise and progress, rather than block off any cooperation from the other side.

  5. It's good to see that our government has moved on since the recent shutdown and now has a new focus, immigration reform. Despite the controversy on the new topic at hand, I feel the government has learned from the shutdown and will continue to compromise, keeping things running as smooth as possible. We can't afford another shutdown, and it's nice to know we are learning from our mistakes.

  6. It is a huge step in the right direction that politicians are even considering some sort of bipartisan support for immigration reform. The shutdown was a low point for American politics as both sides refused to work together. I think that many people were shown how truly devastating it can be when people refuse to work together. Hopefully immigration reform will be the first of many problems the government is able to resolve.

  7. I think this move towards immigration reform is a positive one for everyone. Obviously the Republicans need something like this in order to get their poll numbers above 20%, and the article also states that immigration "has attracted support across the political spectrum." Any sort of reform would be a good idea right now in order to move away from the recent government shutdown. Obviously people know now that there needs to be a change in the way the government is led, so hopefully this is will be the start of new successes taking place in Washington, for everyone's sake.

  8. I found it amusing that Mr. Labrador was accusing Obama of trying to destroy the Republican party and not do good politics, especially after the failed government shutdown. I read an article in the Saturday NY Times that people who traditionally back Republicans financially are threatening to pull support if they continue opposing the Democrats with the new immigration bill. I think that this bill will probably be put off for a year, but I agree that it is nice that the government is moving on.

  9. Definitely very good that the government is trying to go back to what their supposed to be doing after the shut down, but the possibilities for negotiating don't look great. I think the republicans need to stop blaming Obama for their shut down and learn to compromise, and if they can't, it doesn't look good for them.

  11. It's good to see that the government is trying to get back on track and do their jobs. Whether or not you agree with immigration reform, at least the government is back in business and actually doing something productive. Hopefully, this proposed immigration reform bill will help Republicans recover from the setbacks in the polls during the shutdown.

  12. I'm glad to see that our government is trying to move forward from the shutdown, and although there has been little progress, this is a good place to start. I agree with Annamarie that the Republicans need to stop blaming Obama and learn to compromise--that seems to be a huge obstacle for the party in general. As we learned from the shutdown, without compromise NOTHING will get done, and approval of the government will plummet.

  13. I also agree with Anna and Lydia. It's good that the government is starting to get back to what they're meant to do. I also think that the Republicans need to stop blaming Obama for everything that goes wrong in government. One of the reasons that the Democrats and Republicans disagree and dislike each other, other than their completely different views, is that the members of each party have become accustomed to pointing fingers at the opposing party whenever something has gone wrong.

  14. Obviously it is fantastic that the government shutdown is over. It is also promising that congress is at least trying to make something happen by bringing up the issue of immigration. But I also agree that playing the blame game isn't going to get us anywhere. It's both Obama and the Democrats along with the Republican's. It's time for them to man up and take some blame themselves.

  15. It's good to see the government try to move on after the shut down debacle. Hopefully, we can finally see the two parties compromise on some issues. I think it is funny how the Republicans are still blaming Obama and the Democrats for being uncooperative. With their polling numbers way down, you think they would be a little less childish and a little more responsible.

  16. I agree with the comments above. It is good to learn that government members agreed in trying to keep the momentum of compromises rolling after the government shutdown resolved. I hope that this willingness to compromise continues as we move further and further away from the shutdown, but it seems unlikely.

  18. I find it reassuring that the government is displaying willingness to proceed with important matters, despite the setback of the shutdown. Unfortunately it seems to me that the same kind of disagreement will lead to another gridlock between parties, just with a new issue.

  19. I have to say that I'm pleasantly surprised that the democrats and republicans could actually agree on something. I'm also surprised that many of them are so optimistic on reaching a deal. If this can get accomplished then maybe it could lead even more bipartisan support on other issues.
