Nigeria's Government Defends its Actions as More Girls are Abducted

This article talks about the recent abduction of eight girls from the village of Warabe in Nigeria. This report comes after the April abduction of more than 200 girls, who were taken from school and forced into trucks. Nigeria's president has accepted United States military help after accusations that he and the government had "ignored and then later downplayed the abduction of the girls." Although he denies this, there is a global outrage over what's going to happen to the girls, and it's even transferring into social media campaigns. These acts of the group Boko Haram are actually really terrifying and hopefully all of the girls will be brought home safely as soon as possible.

  1. Yikes, this Boko Haram group seems like one crazy and terrifying group of people. I think doing something like this is a horrible thing to do and it is important to put an end to this. No one should have their child or student or someone abducted because a group of nutcases decided to kidnap young girls. This is an awful thing and I think that, in a way, it's good that Nigerian officials are looking for further help outside of their country, but I think the US should still focus on itself before acting like a global policeman. However, helping to find these abducted girls is something I have no problem with American forces doing.

  2. This is very sad to me. When I hear about a tragic situation like this, I am reminded that we take education for granted in the United States. In the US many kids feel like they are forced to go to school, while in Nigeria girls are actually risking their lives to go to school.People are fighting for the right to education all over the world, while many look at education as a chore here in the US.

  3. This situation is awful and I hope all of the girls are found safe and soon. Boko Haram seems like a terrifying group, especially if they would target victims as vulnerable as young girls. Like Kevin said, I'm usually not a fan of the United States acting like the "global policeman," but I feel in this situation that it's necessary. The most important factor is that these girls are found and can be brought home safely. There already is and will be tons more controversy over how quickly and efficiently Nigeria's president acted, so I'm interested to hear about that through the media.

  4. I think it's a good thing that we are helping Nigeria in looking for the girls. There are times when we should put away our objections towards being "global-policemen" and just help. This is certainly one of those times.

  5. This is an instance in which the American government should help. It would be beneficial to the entire world for the U.S. to make the statement that this is not ok, and this will not be tolerated. Some type of action on the part of a strong nation like the U.S. is needed in order to promote equality for women in all countries, and to promote education for women in all countries.
