DOJ brings cyber-espionage case against Chinese officials

DOJ brings cyber-espionage case against Chinese officials

Attorney General Holder announced the indictment of Chinese government officials for their attempts to hack into US businesses. The Chinese government has, for quite some time, been accused of attempting to hack into American websites (for both companies and governments). This is the first time, however, that the US government has responded in a manner of this sort.

In my mind, the threat of Chinese cyber attacks is a serious threat to our national security and it is imperative that we treat it as such. Clearly I am not alone in this feeling, as Defense Secretary Hagel also believes this, noting that “Our nation's reliance on cyberspace outpaces our cybersecurity.”

  1. Cyber attacks is the warfare of the future and I think more of the money spent on defense should be directed towards cybersecurity. I am interested in seeing what exactly Chinese military officials would want with corporate trade secrets. I don't think this will ever go to court because the Chinese government will never cooperate with the United States over something like this.

  2. I think we all can agree that more money needs to be spent on defense against these attacks. Unfortunately, as this is the first time our government has responded, I don't think that much will come of the case we're trying to build against the five chinese citizens. Correct me if i'm wrong, but I don't think that we have any strict laws in place for things such as this? As we beef up our defense, we will have no choice but to enact more laws. We also need to have the other countries working together with us on this as China is refusing to turn over the five hackers.

  3. In my opinion, cyber attacks will only grow to be more and more common in the future. While I highly doubt that the accused will ever be tried in the United States, I believe there should be significant improvements made in cyber security. Hackers are only growing more powerful and skilled and the US and online companies need to learn how to stay several steps ahead of them.

  4. It is scary to think that cyber attacks might be the warfare of the future. Hackers will be getting into a system and doing whatever hackers do without anyone knowing. At least with physical combat you know when a country is invading your territory, but cyber attacks can be stealthy. I agree with Christian that we will need more laws to accommodate the rapid growth of technology in the world today.

  5. It's becoming more and more clear that cyber security is going to be a very important asset in the future of our government, so it's encouraging to see that people are starting to really take it seriously. However, I don't think China should be our first target. My opinion would be to start smaller to get a feel of what it's like in the courts dealing with cyber security, then go after the bigger targets. Also, hindering our relationship with china really isn't in our best interest at the moment.

  6. The future is coming, and the age of cyber attacks is on the horizon. America must be prepared for this very real future, so allocating more funds towards cyber security is not a horrible idea. Also, I think it would be wise if more American people were informed of the dangers of cyber attacks, and signs to look out for on such fronts, because such attacks will only increase.

  7. I feel like this is the beginning to a bad scifi movie. First the Chinese hack our computers. Then they shut down the whole country, and chaos ensues. I agree that more money needs to be spent on cyber security. The main problem is that no body knows really what to do in this situation; how do you prepare for an attack that doesn't even exist in the physical world? How do prepare for unprecendented warfare? I guess we'll find out.

  8. I agree that we should invest more in foreign cybersecurity and that we should call out the Chinese for their blatant actions against United States companies, which have been going on for a while with no high-profile response such as this. However, the United States has to regain its credibility in terms of cyber-espionage; we spy not only on our frenemies (China) but also on our closest allies (Great Britain and all other European countries). The offending Chinese military officials should be punished, but the United States government must consider greater transparency if it wants cooperation from any other nations on this subject.

  9. I agree with Ethan, the US needs to regain credibility when it comes to Cyber-security. While I do support the notion that you cannot trust anyone, we need to invest a little bit of trust in our allies because if we keep getting caught spying on them, we will lose them as allies.

  10. The nature of these acts is probably the reason why we are going after the Chinese in this case, and maybe because it will never come out that we have done something similar to them, but that is just my theory. I agree with most people that this crime should be punished and we should invest more in cyber-security. It is a hard job because they must constantly play catch up, finding a defense from new types of attacks all the time, and trying to understand the attacks. It is even more difficult for them to predict the next new type of attack because who know if someone else is actually thinking that way.

  11. As our world continues to move forward into the world of technology, I guess every aspect comes along. Now we interact with friends, shop, and even steal online now. Today we need to be aware of our lack of cyber security, and I'm glad it's a problem being looked at critically. Ally's right in saying that picking fights with China might not be in our best interest, but this is something worth fighting.
