North Carolina’s Gay-Marriage Ban Is Challenged by Church

THE ARTICLE, CLASSMATES

This article is about a NC church that challenges the same-sex marriage law. The lawsuit is the first case brought by a national religious denomination challenging a state’s marriage laws. The article also shows some people who disagree with the court case, as you will read. Read it, love it, comment. Be merry.

  1. Personally, I don't support same-sex marriage, but it's not my decision who you marry. At this point in time, so many people are for same-sex marriage that I think it's just a matter of time but eventually most states will result in allowing same-sex marriages.

  2. I one hundred percent support gay marriage, but I also feel as though it should not be an issue the government gets involved with as frequently as it does. I agree with Erin, though, that eventually we will see all states legalize gay marriage. It truly only affects the people who are getting married, and it should be a sacred thing, not something the government and people are constantly fighting over.

  3. I am glad that this church is challenging the ban on same sex marriage in North Carolina. It is great to see religious groups speaking for rather than against same sex marriage. Like Lydia, I also support same sex marriage. I hope to see more cases like this one, which will hopefully remove the ban on same sex marriage.

  4. I agree with Erin in that I believe it is only a matter of time until same-sex marriage is allowed nationwide. I'm happy that this church stood up against the law. It seems as though the more that same-sex marriage is in the news, the more it gathers support rather than criticism. With that said, the press that this church is creating could prove to be beneficial to the cause.

  5. I think that we will look back in 30 years and wonder why gay marriage was ever even and issue. Like Erin said it's just a matter of time. I think that it is great that there are now churches who are actively voicing their support for gay marriage, when traditionally churches have been the largest opposition to gay marriage.

  6. Even though the lawsuit is being filed by a church, I'm surprised that they're the first one since so many people have such strong opinions on the issue of gay marriage. I believe this could potentially be a huge win for gay marriage as it continues to gain momentum. I agree with Michaela that in just a few decades this issue will be looked at completely differently.

  7. I am starting to get so sick and tired of seeing this issue come up. It really shouldn't be a government issue who you marry; it should be your choice to marry who you want. However, it seems like people are going to be dissatisfied either way, so I don't see this issue subsiding for a very long period of time. Let people marry who they want to marry, and if you marry someone of the opposite sex (if it's legal wherever you live), just be prepared to deal with the consequences. I don't have a problem with same sex marriage, but I am so sick of this being constantly covered by the news when other policies, issues, and events could be brought to the forefront.

  8. I am totally in support of gay marriage and I think it is great to see more and more religious groups supporting the cause to let people be happy and marry who they want to. This issue has been getting a lot of coverage lately and personally I think that is a great thing. It is an issue that deserves to be covered, and if seeing it so much on the news is what it takes to legalize gay marriage than I don't have a problem with that. Opponents need to realize that just because same gender marriages would be legalized doesn't mean they have to make that choice too.

  9. I completely agree with what Michaela said about looking back in thirty years and wondering why gay marriage was even an issue. I think it's great that the United Church of Christ, along with other churches and religious groups, are showing their support for this issue. Their quote stating "we didn't bring the lawsuit to make others conform to our beliefs, but to vindicate the right of all faiths to freely exercise their religious practices" pretty much sums it all up. The ban should be lifted and hopefully this will be a good progression in the ongoing battle against anti-gay marriage laws.

  10. Like my classmates, I am happy to see that religious organizations are finally supporting gay marriage. I also agree that eventually gay marriage will be legal in all states, but for the sake of those who would benefit from gay marriage equality I hope gay marriage becomes legalized soon.

  11. I not only like that the issue is brought up, but also how it's being confronted. One of the counsel members in the article said “We didn’t bring this lawsuit to make others conform to our beliefs, but to vindicate the right of all faiths to freely exercise their religious practices." It's attacked from a religious freedom standpoint, which I think is pretty cool.

  12. This issue has been a active topic of discussion for a long time in our political system. Personally I believe that it isn't the place of the government to restrict the rights of an individual towards whom they can or cannot marry. It goes farther than common morality and decency when trying to restrict basic rights just on the grounds of religious motives when the government should have a separation of church and state. This situation is occurring all of the nation with the same costs with whether or not the opposition can become victorious over the largely conservative base that try's to restrict this aspect of our society. At the point this has currently reached it is impossible to stop it any longer and hopefully it will come sooner than expected for the many people suffering under this medieval and dogmatic belief.

  13. I think what these people are doing is amazing. As Sam said it's really nice to see a religious group fighting for instead of against same sex marriage. It's wonderful that we are seeing all these big strides being taken for gay rights and I think that in the (somewhat) near future all states will allow same sex marriage.

  14. This is a really cool example of how people can come together to have their voices heard and effect change in the government. Having a church support gay marriage could motivate great strides in the gay rights movement.
