This seemingly joking article about Rand Paul's Snapchat discusses the new media and voting trends of today's young people. The internet age of media is not only highly popular but almost outmoding other forms of news - newspapers and radio espescially. Television remains to be a relevant form of news to young voters. Data from the Pew Center for the People and the Press is analyzed to discuss how politicians can reach young voters. As one of Obama's strategists said, it's about "fishing where the fish are." The GOP is in need of a better connection to the young adult demographic, and this might be it.

I would say that Rand Paul has a great idea in trying to go to where the voters are. I wonder how much of an impact it will have, but it will certainly be difficult to portray him as out-of-touch like many people did with Romney. In that regard, I would say that the Republican Party under Rand Paul has a much better chance with young voters than it would under most other individuals who have potential to be the leader in the party. While I agree with him on a lot, I would be uncomfortable supporting him for President without any executive experience.
ReplyDeleteRand Paul has a great strategy for trying to reach out to a younger demographic through social media. Although, I don't think it's just the GOP that is "out of touch" with the millennial generation. The democrats may seem to be more in tune with us simply because as a whole we are more liberal than other age groups. However, there is still a disconnect because of the different modes of media that we use. It will be interesting to see how politicians' move towards social media as an outlet will affect the 2016 presidential election.
ReplyDeleteRand Paul is heading in the right direction by trying to reach out through social media. To reach young voters in these modern times, it is essential for political parties and politicians to use social media and the internet. Generally, I think people view the Democratic party as being more social media friendly, so it's definitely a positive move for Paul to try and move into that arena.
ReplyDeleteRand Paul was definitely headed in the right direction with his Snapchat stunt to appeal to younger voters. However, as a young voter, I wouldn't want a leader of our nation to be using social networks like a younger person. I look at the presidency position as a position of elegance, maturity, and intelligence. I just see somebody using social networks, such as snapchat, as a person who is not ready to be classified under the adjectives I listed.
ReplyDeleteRand Paul definitely is heading in the right direction, but I see where Ethan is coming from. I always feel weird to see older people on social media, like when my mom favorites my tweets or snap chats me. I don't know exactly how to put it into words, but our parents' age group just seems so strange on social media. Having said that, Paul would hopefully be using a staff of younger adults to control this social media idea. He's starting to walk the walk of our generation, but can he talk the talk?
