Brooks makes some reasonable points in the article (however, I would not want to emulate Ted Kennedy). It makes sense that, in order to govern, you need to learn good political skills. However, it is deeply important that, in the process, you do not lose sight of who you are and why you are there in the first place: to implement changes in American government. Once you get so caught up in the political game, I cannot imagine it is very easy for that to happen and has happened to many once good men.
