The article reports on what Governor Christie had to say
about the actions reportedly made by his top aides without his knowledge. The
article also gives some people’s opinions on the Governor and how he operates.
Personally, I find it hard to believe that Christie had no knowledge of the
events, even after there was first speculation about it.

I am unsure of whether or not he knew about the scandal—I am inclined to believe that he did not know and that his staff simply left him in the dark in the matter. Regardless, Christie cannot be allowed to become the 2016 Republican nominee because of his shaky record on many conservative issues including the environment, gun control, and the Hurricane Sandy relief effort (his state should have had a plan to deal with catastrophic events such as Hurricane Sandy). The Sandy relief fund appropriations certainly has the potential to cause him problems. I am highly skeptical about the belief that Christie will become the nominee.
ReplyDeleteWhile I believe the proof is very clearly in the pudding that Christie's top aids were involved with, if not orchestrated, "Bridgegate," I'm not entirely sure that Christie was completely in the dark. If he was, as he said, unaware, then why did he not look into the seemingly unnecessary toll closings that caused huge traffic problems in his state? Either way, this scandal is definitely not going to help him if he does decide to run for president in 2016. I have a feeling this story will remain in the news for a long time and his name will come to be even further associated with this scandal especially since he already has a reputation as a "bully."
ReplyDeleteChristie may not have been directly involved with Bridgegate, but like Assemblyman John Wisniewski, I too find it "a little hard to believe" that he did not know anything about it. This scandal may blow over in the coming months, but I'm sure Christie's opponents will bring it up again and again as 2016 nears, if he decides to run for president. This, along with his aggressive reputation, will severely harm his chances of earning the Republican Presidential nomination.
ReplyDeleteI feel that Christie's acceptance of ultimate responsibility is good but it is not enough. Though I do believe he did not know about the scandal during its orchestration I am troubled by the fact that he never conducted any kind of investigation regarding the lane closures. This scandal, in combination with how he handled the Sandy Hurricane relief, is going to harm his future political career especially if he is going to pursue the spot of the 2016 Republican Nominee. His handling of the relief, as Andrew stated above, angered conservatives and this scandal has harmed the voters trust in him. If anything this scandal has harmed an already flimsy candidacy for the 2016 Republican Nominee.
ReplyDeleteThe idea that so many people in Christie's inner circle knew about this huge scandal and he didn't, is not believable at all. If just one lane of the "busiest bridge in the world" is closed, it causes significant traffic problems. Closing two lanes of said bridge can lead to serious problems. "I thought it was just lane closures"? Is he really that ignorant? Some people might call it a mild inconvenience, but firstly it can be dangerous for emergency response vehicles (people's lives are at risk) and secondly it means that our government has time to play childish games - which is not okay when we're in the condition we're in.
ReplyDeleteThis whole "bridgegate" scandal is bologna. It is obvious that Christie knew about the lane closures. It makes me mad that people like Chris Christie and his staff are looked up to as leaders and yet they pull childish stunts like this. Like Riley said, these lane closures could have potentially ended fatally with ambulances in traffic. There is no doubt it in my mind that this, and other things, will cause problems further down the road in 2016.

ReplyDeleteI have to think that Christie knew something about this whole Bridge gate scandal before it broke to the press. He probably thought if the story broke to the public, he could play it off by saying he knew nothing. Either way, it was such a dumb thing to do, as the closure really could have caused some serious harm. These people are supposed to be leaders.
ReplyDeleteIt is extremely important for Christie as fast as possible. Whether he is guilty or not is unimportant. For the sake of his winning elections. If he can't get past this, it could have detrimental effects to his campaign.
ReplyDeleteOlivia brings up a good point, these scandals are never going to really go away. Since that is the case, I believe that Christie is telling the truth, however he is probably leaving out some small details. There is no way he could know nothing about what happened with that bridge. This scandal is very disappointing to me because I didn't mind Chris Christie as the Republican presidential candidate for 2014, and now he is going to have a very hard time getting past these scandals.
ReplyDeleteI doubt very much that Christie didn't know about the actions of his staff on an issue like this. There was just way too big a possibility that it could turn into a scandal for someone not to check with Christie before taking such actions. It's good that he's taking responsibility to some extent, but I feel like he's only denying knowledge of what was happening because he thinks nobody will be able to prove that he did know about it.
