Secretary of State Appointment

Potential Secretary of State Candidates
Following Obama's victory he must nominate his cabinet positions most notably Secretary of State since Hillary Clinton stepped down so she can most-likely run for president in 2016.

I think that Susan Rice will be nominated because the democrats do not want to lose the majority in the senate because that will give the republicans am advantage in both houses of congress.

  2. In the past, Obama has made decisions that have been what he believes is best for the country regardless of the opinion of others. If, hypothetically, he believes Susan Rice is more qualified for the position than Kerry, I would not be surprised if she received the position. Also, keeping majority is important for any political party, so this would further encourage Obama to select Rice. On another note, I am interested to follow news about Hillary Clinton. I think with her experience as First Lady, as a New York senator, and as Secretary of State, she would make a very qualified presidential candidate.

  3. First of all, Democrats hold a majority of 53-45 in the Senate (2 seats went to independents, who would side with the Democrats on most issues), so even if Kerry gave up his seat, they would still have a majority. So, Jeff's last point would not be the reason why Obama would not choose Kerry.
Second, from the standpoint of the public at large, I don't believe that Susan Rice's association with the Benghazi terrorist attacks will affect her chances. Frankly, the public has shown minimal interest in this issue, and it would just be seen as more partisanship if the Republicans were to try to block her confirmation because of this.

  4. I'm doubtful that Hillary Clinton will run for President in 2016. She's made several appearances through out the government and I think she stepped down from her chair because she felt she has served her time.

As Grace mentioned, even if Kerry's seat is taken over by Scott Brown, it won't change who has control over the Senate. It will just further divide the Republicans from Democrats in the Senate and there will be less of a majority, but not by much. Democrats will still have control over the Senate. Also, as Grace mentioned, the public has not shown great interest in the Benghazi attacks (which, I don't understand why) so Rice's association with it will not be significant to her potential position.

  5. I highly doubt Rice's comments about the Benghazi attacks will effect how people vote, and believe Obama will make whatever choice he thinks is best, regardless of the fight he may have to put up for it.

  6. If Obama nominated a republican to the office it would show he is willing to compromise if he chose a moderate one, though that would be highly unlikely. I would like to see how things would go if Kerry got the job for sec. of state and there would be an election for his open senate seat.

  7. I think Obama will pick his sec. of state based off what he thinks will be best for our country. Since the democrats will still have a majority in the senate, I don't think that will effect Kerry from receiving the position.

  8. I think it would be very interesting, as Justin said, if Obama chose a Republican for the position. That could symbolize a big change in these next four years and hope for bipartisanship, which would be a nice change to the past few years. However, that is so very unlikely to happen. Also, I must agree with Sam and Grace, there is little chance that Susan Rice's comment on Benghazi will affect her receiving the position, only because Americans have shown so very little interest in the Benghazi attacks. It's been two months and we still haven't heard all of the information from the event, and the press seems to be ignoring such as well as many Americans.

  9. Obama's appointment of Secretary of State is quite interesting. Both top-running candidates have "close ties" with Obama which most likely led them to being in the spotlight at the moment. the "withering criticism from Republicans for asserting that the deadly attack on the American mission in Benghazi, Libya" is not what Ms. Rice needs at the moment because of what a crucial time it is in her career. Seen as the "clear favorite," it will be interesting to see if Ms. Rice can side-step this obstacle.

  10. Although Rice seems to be the frontrunner so far, I would not be dumbfounded if she did not receive the position. According to the article, the loss of Kerry's Senate seat does not "appear quite as problematic as it did before last Tuesday." This is assuming, of course, that the loss of the seat is a major factor in the President's decision. With a Democrat majority in the Senate, there would not be major losses if Kerry's seat was taken by a Republican.

  11. Grace is completely right in saying that the comments about Benghazi attacks not affecting the chances for Rice. With a ressume like Susan Rice's it will be very difficult to see President Obama to choose John Kerry over her. The article also said that if Kerry does not receive the position he could also be considered for secretary of defence position so this become less of a debate of partisonship.

  12. I agree with Adam and Grace. After the hearings Benghazi will become part of the past and I think people won't pay as much attention to it anymore. Ms. Rice's resume proves she is well qualified and I believe she will continue to be the frontrunner.

  13. Based upon the lack of interest in the Benghazi terrorist attacks I do not think that it will affect Rice's candidacy. It would be interesting of Obama did choose a Republic for this position. However, I think that Obama will choose the Secretary of State based upon what he thinks is best for the country.

  14. I would personally like to see a republican selected as the Secretary of State because then our country is stepping away from the election that truly showed the country's divides. The Benghazi attacks no longer seem to have a strong impact on Susan Rice's image, so I would not be very surprised if she is selected for the position.

  15. I believe that Ms. Rice will continue to hold the lead for the position of Secretary of State because even though some people may be effected by the Benghazi attacks most people including President Barack Obama should be willing to look at her many successes. All in all, Barack Obama should choose who he will serve our country best instead of a candidate from his party or a person he has close relations with.
