Congress Resumes With a G.O.P. Leadership Fight

Congress Resumes With a G.O.P. Leadership Fight
This article from the New York Times discusses the GOP's upcoming decision as to who will be the leader of the party. The decision is between Representative Cathy McMorris Rodgers of Washington and Representative Tom Price of Georgia. Both have a large following within the party, but each represent a possible direction for the GOP to take after their defeat in the Presidential election.
I feel that in this situation after coming off of the loss of the Presidential election, it would be in the best interest of the GOP to have Representative Cathy McMorris Rodgers lead the party. She is far less conservative in her views than Representative Tom Price and at this time the GOP should avoid leaning too far to the right. It is not something the majority of Americans want to see, as we saw in the past few weeks. I think that by choosing Representative Cathy McMorris Rodgers the GOP can begin to reinvent themselves into a party more desirable for more Americans.

  1. The republicans would be fools to elect Tom Price as the leader of the party. Everyone, including conservatives, are talking about how the party has veered too far to the right and is becoming unrelatable to voters, a point exemplified by the recent landslide of an election. Choosing a leader of the house who's an extreme conservative would do nothing but alienate the party even more. Ms. Rodgers on the other hand would help to bring a new face to the party and, hopefully, some moderate ideas.

  2. I feel that bringing Cathy Rodgers into the GOP would be a better idea than having Tom Price being the leader for the shear fact that the GOP is becoming to extreme in their values. I understand that the GOP stands for the die-hard republicans and to make someone who is a super die-hard republican the leader of the party is what the GOP probably wants, but it is a terrible idea. If the GOP want what is best for the party, they would pick Cathy Rodgers to be the leader of the party to bring different ideas in and not just the same old die-hard republican ideas that Tom Price would bring in.

  3. I am going to say do not go for either of them and bring in Chris Christie as head or presidential nominee. Generally speaking he is moderate, and extremely likeable. If there is anyone who would be able to come back and breathe life back into the GOP it would be Christie. Otherwise I have a feeling the Republicans may just turn on eachother and implode from the inside out. Then again that is just a worst case scenario, but it is still possible.

  4. This definitely is an important and delicate decision that the GOP needs to make. If they do not choose wisely, they could easily see the House back in Democratic control in 2014. I definitely agree that they should pick the more moderate of the two. These next four years are going to have to be all about compromise. We need leaders in both parties that are willing to listen to each other and make difficult decisions together. The GOP really needs to realize this or they are going to have a tough time of the next few years.

    1. I don't think he meant it that way. It's just an idea. Honestly, the GOP could use anyone who isn't die-hard conservative at the moment and will consider moderate ideas otherwise they will lose a good amount of voters for not wanting to change anything.

    2. No Sebastian im giving them a good idea, and im sorry I don't understand whether or not that was supposed to be funny but let's not be smart over the internet ok? Christie is just in my opinion the best option they have now you don't like it fine, but please do not pull that again. Funny or not it wasn't appreciated.

  6. I agree that Cathy McMorris Rodgers should be the leader of the GOP. Nora makes a good point about how the republican party has veered to far to the right. If they became more moderate on some issues then I'm sure that more people would be able to relate to the republican party better.

  7. I agree with Seb that who the GOP chooses is a crucial decision. I personally believe that Cathy McMorris Rodgers would be the smartest decision. There is a wide-spread belief that the Republican Party is against "women's rights" and having a woman run the party could cause some voters to take another look at their positions. I think that she would definitely be a better choice than Tom Price, as he is much more conservative. Right now, the GOP needs to take a more moderate approach in order to win over some more independent voters.

  8. The loss in the presidential election would probably benefit Cathy Rodgers more than Tom Price, because the loss shows that the Republicans are becoming a little to extreme/conservative for the general public. The fact that Tom Price is known for his extremely conservative ideals, Cathy Rodgers should be put in charge. Rodgers would probably appeal to the public more and bring a more moderate stance to the Republicans.

  11. I agree with everybody that Rodgers is better than Price for the party's image. The ridiculous margins that Obama won by among women and minorities are not going to change anytime soon unless the GOP tries to be something more than the party of rich, white men. Picking Price will show the electorate that Republicans haven't learned their lesson. I also wanted to say that this is a really cool issue to talk about and I had no idea this was happening.

  12. Like most people here believe, Cathy Rodgers would probably be the better choice for the GOP since she could help bring the party back to the center of the political spectrum and might help with their image among women. I imagine that the republican base supports Price more though based on ideology, so this could turn into the base vs. the establishment, but the party leaders are well aware that they are having issues attracting moderates so I expect Rodgers to win.

  13. Some of the policies of the GOP turn many voters away from them because of their right-leaning tendencies. Many political analysts saw the presidential election as a big example of why the GOP has to start choosing more moderate members. The person who is close to middle will always have the advantage than someone who leans to one side. Choosing the more moderate Cathy Rodgers will be a step in the right direction for the GOP.
