A group of armed protestors, led by Cliven Bundy, took control of the Masher National Wildlife Refuge building near Burns, Oregon, and will not leave and wants the government to hand over land resources. Conservatives who are sympathetic to their cause have openly criticized these protestors, such as Marco Rubio calling them “lawless.” Conservative sympathy arrives in the belief that there is too much federal control over land. Are these protestors entirely unreasonable in their demands? Is the reaction of conservatives surprising?

I would not say that their demands are entirely unreasonable, but their method of trying to solve their problem is. I don't think that they will ever accomplish what they set out to do. I do not think the reaction of conservatives is surprising, as endorsing illegal actions would most likely alienate voters.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Ryan. The belief that the federal government has too much control over land is fairly common, especially among conservatives, so I can recognize that it's a reasonable belief, even though I don't share it. But although the protestors' goal might be sympathetic to some, the method they're using to try to achieve it is not acceptable. We have laws, and they're not following them, so the reaction of conservatives isn't surprising.
ReplyDeleteThese armed protestors' beliefs are justified but obviously as the article we read in class said, putting on their "Sunday camo" and attempting to seize a federal building is absolutely illegal. The conservatives are justified in not supporting the actions of these jamokes.

ReplyDeleteI agree with Merry, these protestors' beliefs are very justifiable. Their methods to achieve their goal is by no means justifiable at all though. They are clearly breaking many laws. I do not think the conservatives' reaction is surprising.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what most of the group is saying; their belief is justified but the way they carry out their actions, like trying to take over federal buildings is simply wrong. The reaction of conservatives and their sympathy isn't surprising.
ReplyDeleteWhile I see merit in the the protesters' arguments, I personally disagree. Additionally, the method by which they are attempting to make their point erases any semblance of credibility they once had. The GOP has been actively trying to distance itself from the word "crazy," so its opposition to the protesters is not surprising.
