Paul Ryan doubtful about defunding Planned Parenthood

In a recent interview, new House Speaker Paul Ryan said that Planned Parenthood should not receive any money from taxpayers. He claimed that he has always thought this, "even before these disgusting videos came out." Ryan currently has a team investigating Planned Parenthood. Yet when asked if he would defund Planned Parenthood, he replied that, in order to be effective, his party needs to be realistic about what is and what is not achievable, but they still need to push for things they believe should be changed. Should Paul Ryan be investigating Planned Parenthood? Although he is doubtful that Planned Parenthood will actually be defunded, would you agree with those who want to defund it? Do you believe that Planned Parenthood should get taxpayers' money?

  1. I am pro-life and I believe that abortion is killing innocents without a voice. I think this does need to be investigated, but I understand that many women see this as a helpful escape route. Maybe instead of completely defunding Planned Parenthood, we could gradually shift our tax money away from that institution and toward shelters and adoption centers. I do not think that we can completely abandon these women and families, but I believe that this institution is wrong and needs to change. By shifting our funding, we might be able to fade out the reliance on abortion for ending unplanned pregnancies.

  2. I am pro-choice and even though abortions is part of what Planned Parenthood does, it is not only what it does. They also help women, men and teenagers with birth control (birth control is not only used for the prevention of pregnancy but also for regulating periods, stopping period cramps, regulating hormones, etc.), STD testing and treatment, breast exams, Pap tests, and many more services. In fact, only a very small percentage of their services are abortions (3% according to their website - most of their services focus on prevention of birth and STDs). Therefore, I do not believe that Planned Parenthood should be defunded. What would happen if their services were not available anymore? How many more unplanned pregnancies would occur? How many more STDs would be spread unknowingly? Although there are issues with the morality of their abortion services, I believe it is important to try to look past that as it is only a small part of their overall services.

  3. I am very pro-life and I personally believe that abortion is a sin. It's killing innocent lives and that's against the law! Even though they have no voice, the act of killing an innocent human being is cruel. I think this does need to be investigated, but I do agree with how Planned Parenthood provides help for women, and that help needs to be given for some who aren't that educated on what they are doing. I don't believe that Planned Parenthood should be completely defended, because there is some good advice given to women in need and that need someone to talk to, in order to understand what they're going through. If they don't have anyone to talk to, there's always someone there women can go for help. Abortion isn't the only thing Planned Parenthood is known for, they also help women and men with birth control and the prevention of STDs, as well as other tests and services. Therefore, Planned Parenthood shouldn't be defunded because their services are needed and STDs is something very prominent in our society so that needs to be controlled by having this organization. Although I'm against abortion, I still think Planned Paretnhood has other good services otherwise, including the testing of STDs. I do believe that Planned Parenthood should get some of the taxpayers' money because this is an organization that is for the well being of our society. Even though many may not agree with abortion, you need to look at the bigger picture and that's helping people in their time of need.

  4. I belive that a probe into Planned Parenthood might be necessary, but that defunding it would be tragic. As mentioned already by Talia, Planned Parenthood provides far more than abortions and is relied on by many people for reproductive health services. I belive that Planned Parenthood should receive taxpayer dollars because of the many good services it provides to poor citizens who would not have access to these services without Planned Parenthood.

  5. I believe that Planned Parenthood should be defunded in the same way that many other state-sponsored organizations should lose their funding. An argument could be made to defund almost any organization or institution currently sponsored by the government, however in order to gain said sponsorship to begin with, the organization must be one that can provide a certain level of aid or support to some (if not all) Americans. But because Planned Parenthood follows this general guideline, and is able to help so many people (and it doesn't have a considerable profit margin), it deserves the funding that it gets so it can continue to operate. Additionally, those who are "pro-life" should not be able to impose their views on the lives of others, nor should they be able to shut down one of the few organizations that exists to help people when they have nowhere else to turn.

  6. Should Ryan be personally investing in the investigation of Planned Parenthood? I think that any organization receiving money from the federal government should be required to follow the law and if one of those organizations is possibly breaking the law, the federal government should look into it. I don't believe that Planned Parenthood should be defunded - abortions aside, they do a lot of good for both men and women. That being said, I understand why some are uncomfortable with their taxes going towards something they believe is a sin. I wish there were a way for both sides to be happy, but there is no way for money to go from the government to Planned Parenthood for everything they do except abortions. Therefore, I would say that the definitive good they do far outweighs the bad that some believe abortions to be and so they should not be defunded.

  7. Yes, if Planned Parenthood is possibly doing things such as selling tissue and organs from aborted fetuses, then Paul Ryan should investigate the organization. However, I don't think it should be defunded. Even if Planned Parenthood does help with abortions, it also provides a lot of other essential services such as sex education, which is important for everyone to learn, and for this reason, I think it should still be funded with taxpayers' money.

  8. If Paul Ryan wants to investigate Planned Parenthood over possible illegal activities than he has the power and the right to due so. It should be noted however that the video that has "evidence" of illegal activity has been showed to be a hoax. I absolutely disagree with those wanting to defund PP. It would hurt all the people that depend on PP for its services, which includes much more than abortions. I believe it helps a lot of people and it should be funded by tax payers money. If we take that away it would only hurt our communities, especially low income women.

  9. I think Paul Ryan should investigate Planned Parenthood. It's a federally funded organization, therefore I feel their entitled to see what the organization is doing with their money and any possible negative effects and repercussions of funding them. I wouldn't go so far as to defund planned parenthood because as Talia said they perform many other vital duties and functions besides abortion that are crucial to our reproductive health. I think a censure or regulation of Planned Parenthood's actions might be in order, and people are just giving a knee-jerk reaction to the leaked video (even though it IS graphic and horrific). I think Planned Parenthood should get taxpayer money, how much I'm not sure though. They play a helpful role in our country.

  10. I agree with Tanner that since Planned Parenthood is a federally funded organization, the federal government should be conducting the investigation, not Ryan. I think Planned Parenthood shouldn’t be defunded. I understand that many people believe abortions are wrong and don’t want their tax money to fund organizations that help people get them, but Planned Parenthood provides other services that help many people. They educate people, test for STDs, and help with birth control. All of the positive services that Planned Parenthood provides shouldn’t be defunded just because people don’t support abortions.

  11. Tell Paul Ryan to give me a call when he finds anything interesting. I personally think he is wasting his time. The legitimacy of these videos is up in the air in my opinion. If Planned Parenthood is doing shady things, then they need to be dealt with accordingly. Overall, Planned Parenthood does so much more than perform abortions. People are so caught up over one thing that they are neglecting the big picture. Planned Parenthood is a key proponent of preventing a lot of the issues involving teenage sex and sex in general. Sexual education, STD Prevention, and sexual health are all services provided by Planned Parenthood. I believe this should definitely be funded by taxpayers because at any point, anyone could use Planned Parenthood if needed. You never know what could happen. For some people, this may be the only medical service they have and depriving them of that would be depriving them of a healthy and safe lifestyle they can enjoy.

  13. I'm trying not to copy what others say but I do agree. The videos have not been verified at all and to not fully support the program is ridiculous. He has lots of power now and he needs to please both sides of the aisle. It does not matter at this point if your party is pleased. If our country wants to make any progress then we cant just see in red and blue. It is the women's choice, it is her body and who are you Paul Ryan to dictate what women do? I feel like republicans think of PP just as a place to get help with abortion. It is so much more. It helps thousands of people so why should we take it away.

  14. I myself am pro-choice, however I do agree with and understand many of the arguments pro-life supporters make, in the sense that all life’s matter. In the end my siding comes down to the fact that I believe women have the right to be able to control their pregnancy and should be allowed to have the choice to end the pregnancy for their own justifiable reasons. I believe Paul Ryan should be investigating Planned Parenthood, but in the sense to keep it regulated and controlled. Condition of a planned parenthood should be maintained to a certain high standard. I don’t believe that Planned Parenthood will be defunded do to the strong liberal presence in government. I also don’t believe it should be defunded I think Planned Parenthood should be supported do to the help it gives not only women but all those who go there to seek it.

  15. I am very pro-life and I believe that abortion is an evil that society needs to combat. Of course there are some instances when abortions are necessary but killing a child simply because he or she is an inconvenience is something I cannot wrap my mind around. I know many of the claims against Planned Parenthood are questionable, but I do believe that Planned Parenthood must be investigated because I don't want my parents' hard-earned money going to an organization that may possibly be selling the body parts of aborted children. I support defunding Planned Parenthood and creating a different organization that does not promote abortions but still provides STD testing and sexual awareness.
