Foreign lobbying oversight found lax

In the case of foreign lobbyists, laws are easily bypassed. We have analyzed in class some of the political strategies that lobbyists have used to get around laws but when it comes to foreign lobbyists, these restrictions are easily passed. The article explains how "lax" the rules on foreign lobbying are and the under-enforcement of lobbying laws exist in the country.

  1. I think that it is obvious that foreign lobbyists should be required to comply with the same rules that other lobbyists have to comply with as even though the lobbyists are foreign, they are still trying to influence the American government, which means they should have to follow America's rules. The government and lobbying firms should be more attentive to the rules that govern lobbying, and there should not be cases where the law is being broken.

  2. I agree with Raman. All lobbyists should face similar laws considering foreign affairs plays a huge role in most governments. If a lobbyist is trying to affect American policy then they must comply with American laws. Someone should apply more strict regulation of these foreign lobbying organizations.

  3. I agree with both Raman and Dan. If a lobbyist is lobbying in America they should follow American laws. There should be no difference between foreign and American lobbyists. The laws should be applied more strictly and not be broken just because someone is foreign.

  4. I think that if a foreign lobbyist is engaging in lobbying in America, they should have to follow the same laws as the American lobbyist. They are participating in America, therefore, they should follow American laws even though they are not from here. If an 18 year old Canadian comes to America, they're not allowed to drink here, even though they can drink in their own country. We apply rules to foreigners in that respect, so why should we not apply the laws to foreign lobbyists?

  5. I agree with everyone above. I think that it should be obvious that foreign lobbyists should comply with the laws of the country they are lobbying in. It makes the most sense. It would not be fair if they got a different set of laws. I also agree with Dan saying that there should be stricter regulations on foreign lobbying organizations.

  6. As everyone else has stated, foreign lobbyists should have to comply with the same laws to which American lobbyists are held. If not, it gives a clear advantage to foreign organizations who may be seeking lobbying goals at odds with American special interest groups. Without a uniform set of guidelines by which all attempting to influence public policy must operate, corruption favoring foreign governments and causes will occur extensively.

  7. I'm not saying anything new compared to the other comments, but I also agree that even though foreign lobbyists aren't American, they should still have to comply to the same laws when dealing with American politicians. I also think it would be very difficult to implement though, due to the fact that they aren't citizens here, and putting American laws on foreigners is always a little bit sticky.

  8. I still can believe that our government official can still be outwitted by these lobbyists, so that corrupt activities can continue to occur. It doesn't matter what your interest is, national or foreign, all lobbyists must be held to the same standards

  9. I would much rather have my government lobbied by American interests than foreign ones. I agree with others who have stated that foreign lobbyists should be strictly regulated, probably more so than domestic lobbyists.

  10. I agree with Andy and Raman. A foreign government should have to follow the same rules that American lobbyists do. If anything, the rules on foreign lobbying should be more strict than domestic ones because it is American policies at stake.
