The House Passes and Overdue Bill on Child Care

The government lately has been ineffectual and lagging behind. No matter what, there should be some basic, and relatively easy to address, issues addressed in a timely manner by Congress. The bill passed recently through the House was proof of just how behind our government is. This bill that was just passed gives a desperately needed update on previous laws that we would think were basic requirements, such as full background checks for workers, certain safety precautions, and required information sessions for parents. It's good that this bill is finally being passed, but it should've been years ago. Why is the government ineffective? Because even for education bills for young children, all the parties can think about is how this will benefit them in the next election.

  1. I am really happy that the Child Care and Development Block Grant Act has been passed. I believe that it should have been done a long time ago. With low income families already struggling to make ends meet, parents should not have to worry about their child and what to do with the child after they come home for school. I think that with this bill, parents will have more time to work and provide for their families. Also, by putting the children in good care, they will not be at home and doing nothing. This way, the kids get a chance to learn more in school and interact with other children instead of staying home. I know that the kids may be young but they are in a better environment at day care than if they were at home.

  2. I agree with Aileen. Low income families should have help for their children. Kids should not be effected by how much their parents make and should get the help they need. This not only helps the children but also the parents. This way the parents who really need to both work will be able to. This act helps both parents and children and I think it will be beneficial.

  3. It's sad to think that Congress has taken so long to pass such a simple bill that shouldn't have any political connotations attached. As Alexa said, both parties are only thinking of how this will affect their political careers. This is understandable in this political climate, yet I wish this didn't have to come into play so often. However it is a step in the right direction that the parties could work together to pass this bill.

  4. Although their reasoning differs, both parties accept this bill now with open arms. The only thing that has changed is the timing, which appears ripe for politicians who want to be re-elected. Before now, there just wasn't enough personal incentive for those involved, I guess? When a policy is as clear-cut and overwhelmingly beneficial as this one is, I should think that Congress would be willing to approve it as soon as possible. That simply isn't the case.

  5. I agree with Rachel that it is sad that one of the reasons this bill was passed was to make both parties look good in the eyes of the public. At the same time, I think it is still a good thing that the bill was passed at all. Having a safe place to go after school will help these kids receive a better education, whoch will ultimately help them in the future.

  6. A good education is the most important thing that this government can provide in order to secure a good future for the country as well as its citizens. Education should be the most important issue because an educated population drives a stronger economy and better schools will produce better future leaders that will accomplish more than the leaders we have in place now. Imagine a congress that actually did things! This grant is a step in the right direction but I feel as if more can be done

  7. I think that the passing of this bill is a good thing, and I agree with the idea that an early education can accelerate and assist brain growth. It is a shame that this bill was not passed earlier, but it is still "better late than never." Despite the sluggishness of the passage of the bill, I think that this bipartisan achievement is a beneficial step towards mutual cooperation in Congress. With the Republican majority likely to increase in the coming months and a Democrat still at the head of the executive branch, it is important that the two parties learn to work together, as they will need to cooperate with each other a lot in the next couple years.

  8. This is great news. There is no reason this Bill shouldn't have been passed earlier. Education is instrumental in building a stronger nation in every arena. Our public and private sectors will be fit from this when these future generations are released into the workforce.

  9. I think that politics often takes a long time with social reform and a lot less time for military grants. However fast our government works toward social reform I am impressed and happy that this bill has been passed. As the two parties become further and further apart ideologically we can try to synchronize our steps in movements like these.

  10. I agree with Ethan when he says that a good education is the most important thing our government can provide its citizens. The Child Care and Development Block Grant is a step in the right direction. Although it might have taken much longer than expected, this bill has been much needed. It will allow for low income parents to be able to provide for their kids, while their kids are given a fighting chance to escape poverty by helping further their education at a young age.

  11. If implemented efficiently, this law will be very beneficial to those it seeks to assist. As many comments have asserted, education is crucial to the long-term success of individuals, and of our republic as a whole. I agree with the "better late than never" sentiment, because the bill seems to have numerous positive reasons for passing with bipartisan support, but it should have been done earlier. Lawmakers are clearly hoping to score political points for themselves and their parties before the election, which is a shameful reason for finally passing a child care bill that doesn't appear to have any downsides.

  12. I'm very happy to hear about the governments push for access to earlier education and child are for lower income families. Education is one of the most important things to emphasize today, especially now that jobs are becoming more geared toward people with an extensive education. This bill will keep kids safe in a environment where they can begin their early learning.

  13. Personally I'm glad that this law was updated, but why did it take nearly 20 years for something like this to be enacted? Working mothers are a growing portion of the population and it is important that their children be cared for while their parents are at work. This legislation in extremely important for single mothers as well. Caring for children can be overwhelming and finding an efficient and affordable caretaker can be very difficult. It's a shame this bill was so late but at least it came. This will benefit many families.
