Kerry: U.S. not planning to arm Syrian rebels 'at the moment'

Remember Syria? That Assad guy is still out there. The new Secretary of State John Kerry stated the Aministration's views on Syria. The federal government refuses to give the rebels weapons; it sends boatloads of non-lethal aid instead. Kerry believes that international pressure is mounting on the Assad regime and that more cracks will begin to show themselves.
Kerry also describes himself as"not a yes-man. He says that he is willing to tell the president the truth, a rare trait to find in a person in Washington. I think that Kerry will make a good Secretaries of State. I also applaud the administration's decision to not sell weapons to Syrians; this would probably make the problems much worse

  1. I agree with John. If the administration sold more weapons to Syria, the problem would probably get worst. I don't really understand that much about Syria, but I don't want anymore problems to occur there. I feel the John Kerry would make a good Secretary of State because he had a lot of experience.

  2. I think it is pretty obvious that we should not be giving the rebels weapons. I mean they did just take hostage several U.N. Peacekeepers. I will miss Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State, but since she left, I am glad the person to take her job is Kerry. If there is one thing that Kerry definitely is, it is being qualified for this position. I am glad John posted something other that our economic or social domestic problems. It is important to remember not to get too caught up in all of the shenanigans -that right shenanigans that is going on in our country- and make sure we are making responsible decisions around the world.

  3. Ah, international relations. So much fun. I think its good that we are still giving some funding to Syrian rebels. I also like how we are sticking to our guns: during the third presidential debate, Obama said we weren't going to give weapons to Syria. While this may seem like Kerry is just acting as a yes man, this may just be the best solution. After all, there is information that the public is not privy to, usually for good reasons.

  4. There is not too much the US can do at this point to further help the rebels without taking some kind of military action. I agree that it does not seem wise to give weapons to the rebels. We don't have any real reason too other than humanitarian ones, which if we worried about too much, we would have to give a lot more rebels weapons other then just syria. Maybe the UN can help a bit more, but judging from past conflicts like this, it seems unlikely.

  5. This seems like a good move. Giving more weapons to people who, like Sebastian point out, just recently took hostages doesn't quite seem like the best idea. Non-lethal aid is just as helpful as firearms in any sort of wartime situation, so it's not like we're not helping at all.

  6. Good, help them, but don't arm them. The last thing we need is to get caught up in any kind of military reaction again. I wish that the regime would have stepped down by now, but underneath mounting pressure and ripping the nation apart more or less, something's got to give in the end.

  7. This appears to be a good choice on Kerry's part. Seeing as Syria just took U.N. peacekeepers hostage, it would be a poor choice to arm the rebels with weapons, but I can live with sending them aid.

  8. Based on how Kerry responded to all of the questions and plans to deal with the situation, I am very happy to see him as the new Secretary of State. I hope that his performance in the position is just as good as it sounds like it will be. I really hope that the right decisions will be made to deal with this fragile conflict.

  9. I agree with everyone that what Kerry is doing is right arming the people with weapons might not be the best idea. I hope that no more problems occur and the problems with Syria would stop. Any kind of help to Syria might not be a good idea because it could potentially create some major problems.

  10. I believe that giving the rebels of Syria weapons would just add to the chaos. We would be exacerbating the situation over there. It was very smart of Kerry to send non-lethal help. It is morally right to help out, so sending non harmful aid seems ideal.
