Warning Iran, U.S Sends Two More Ships to Yemen
as a warning to Iran, who has been shipping weapons to rebels in Yemen, the U.S. had sent two more warships on top of the other ten that were already in the waters of Yemen. The warships are about sending a message to Iran that the U.S. is watching and meant to reassure Saudi Arabia that the U.S. supports their bombing campaign against the rebels.

While I think it's good that the US is asserting itself as a threat to Yemen and an ally of Saudi Arabia and other concerned countries, I prefer the idea of a regional conference to the silent intimidation of warships. Yes the increased military power on that side of the world definitely shows our preparedness and eradicates any doubt that we will hesitate to take action for what we believe in, but if conflict can be avoided and lives can be saved and especially if the creation of nuclear weapons can be avoided, I think the steps to achieve those goals should be taken before the steps to assert military dominance.
ReplyDeleteRelations between Iran and America are extremely complicated and that's especially true right now. It's good that the administration is admitting to a policy of compartmentalization.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Antonella that a regional conference is preferable to escalated force. Over-application of military forces in that area by anybody on any side has proven to usually have unintended consequences.
Between the sort-of-existing-but-not-really-alliance against ISIS, opposite positions regarding Yemen and the ongoing attempts to form an agreement, the present US-Iran relations has added further complications to an already deeply complicated region.
Obama is never going to use military forces against Iran, ever, for any reason. We simply have better things to do than invade a country that ultimately poses a threat to no one. Ultimately, since they are helping us fight ISIS, we would never bite the hand that is feeding us in that regards. In addition, Sunni Muslims already hate us because of our involvements in Afghanistan and Iraq. Invading Iran would piss of the Shiites too, meaning the entire Muslim world would now want us dead.
ReplyDeleteThe warships should be enough of a threat that further action isn't necessary, but who knows. I don't think Obama would be all for sending in ground troops to fight, hence, why these warning signs have been sent. Hopefully this will be a success in ending the shipment of weapons. I agree with the article that this is all just a message. I agree that a regional conference is much better than force.
ReplyDeleteI think that Iran knows America is not trying to get into another war. They understand this so they probably will not get too upset over the ships. Obama is only trying to send a message though. Hopefully these two ships make Iran think about what they are doing but i doubt they will.
ReplyDeleteI think it is good that we are sending a message to Iran that we know what they are doing in Yemen by sending these warships. However, I do agree with Malachi and Antonella that a regional conference would still be the preferable option. Such a conference would be difficult to hold as long as the US and other nations are still trying to hammer out a finalized deal with Iran concerning nuclear weapons capabilities. So long as this is occurring, I think the most the US can do is send these warships in as a warning while watching the situation closely.
ReplyDeleteSending in warships is a good warning by the US. However, I don't think it should really go any farther than that. Sending in troops would honestly create a massive mess and we are certainly not looking to get into any wars anytime soon. The US should definitely keep an eye on the situation, though.
ReplyDeleteThis warning is a good thing. The U.S. is asserting itself in a positive and strong way to show Yemen and Iran that we aren't fooling around. It would be ideal that only a threat would be enough but only time will tell what it takes for Iran and Yemen to get the message.
ReplyDeleteI strongly support the administration's decision to send the warships as a signal. The presence of the warships however does more than act as a deterrent for the smuggling of weapons to Houthi rebels from Iran. The warships are exhibiting power as a nuclear deal is being struck out with Iran. While a regional conference would be a good idea, some sentiments just cannot be expressed through political sweet talk. Personally, I am not okay with Iran continuing development of nuclear weapons. Such capabilities would be a danger to our allies and us. In my opinion, the region is not stable enough to house nuclear capabilities. Sending strong signals is necessary.
