A New Comer to Populism? Hillary Clinton Begs to Differ
In her second run for office, Hillary Clinton is embracing the ideas of the populist party and Senator Elizabeth Warren. Clinton must convince voters she is a valuable messenger for inequality and prove her sincerity as a populist.

I'm glad this article made it onto the blog this week because it's so so relevant! Hillary Clinton certainly has a daunting task ahead of her with changing the public's views on the originality of her policy ideas and in disassociating herself with the policies of her husband, but she seems to be going about it well. The 16-page booklet with examples of her stances on policy in the past distinguish her from Elizabeth Warren, as do her methods for resolving economic distress. She also made a clear decision to represent the middle and lower classes, and her focus on taxes certainly appeals to that voting bloc. While she will need to work hard to accomplish her goals, the article makes it sound like she's off to a great start.
ReplyDeleteAs far as populism goes, Elizabeth Warren completely beats hillary clinton. Im not sure why liberals are so set on having hillary clinton as their candidate. Elizabeth Warren would be a much better candidate and could really attract people to the movement. Hillary is just flat out boring. I dont care about her at all
ReplyDeleteHillary Clinton definitely has to prove to many that she has separated herself from her original policy ideas and those of her husband as well. I feel that people should listen to what she has to say now, and focus on her new policy ideas, rather than judge her based off the past. People can change their minds!!! I enjoy her new economic policy goals mentioned in the article, although they seem tough to accomplish. Her support for the middle and lower classes is going to attract many voters.
ReplyDeleteHilary Clinton is in a tough spot here. She has already fun for office and her husband was president. They have been prominent on the political scene for many years. It is very tough now to change your ways. I feel like the public will catch on and realize she is simply trying to win votes over.
ReplyDeleteHillary Clinton will definitely have a difficult time convincing people that she is a populist. But I agree with Antonella that she has gotten off to a great start. She has been out of the discussion for years while Elizabeth Warren took the spotlight, but now that she is back in it I think she will be able to change people's perception of her. Of course, it will take time and effort but it is still early so there is plenty of time to see what happens.
ReplyDeleteHillary Clinton is definitely going to face some challenges in convincing people of her views. Americans are quick to connect her to the policies and views of her husband so she is going to need to find a way to break from that connection and prove herself if she wants any real chance.
ReplyDeleteIf Hillary Clinton existes to chance public perception, she's gonna have a harder time than even Jeb Bush. Clinton has repeatedly been in the spotlight since being First Lady as a Senator, presidential nominee in 2008, and Secretary of State.
ReplyDeleteBush, on the other hand, has been in the spotlight as a governor, brother and son primarily and he doesn't have nearly as much recognition as Hillary Clinton. Despite this, we read an article a while back that showed Bush having trouble changing public perception.
Ultimately, Clinton's own popularity/controversialness (take your pick) will make it extremely difficult for her to change how voters view her.
Even though Hillary Clinton is embracing the ideas of populist party and saying that "the wealthy have been benefiting disproportionately from the economy while the middle class and the poor have been left behind," doesn't help the fact that it might be a little too late for that statement. She has been in the political light for years now and people know what she's all about. People are going to associate her policies with her husband's as hard as she tries to veer away and go into her own light. She needs to find a way to prove to people she is sticking to the populist values and making a name for herself.
ReplyDeleteI think people should be more open minded. I know it's hard because people tend to stay in their ways, but sometimes people can change their views and minds.
ReplyDeleteAt this point, I think Hillary Clinton needs to worry about not drifting too far to the left. It was interesting to see that when she was in the White House, her and her aids were known as the Bolsheviks! While I definitely agree that the minimum wage should be increased and the income gap must be paired down, Clinton needs to watch how she brings up these sensitive issues. Frequently touting that the one percent must be "toppled" is not going to help her win the race...especially when money has such a large effect on campaigns these days. As a prospective voter, I would like to see what fresh NEW ideas Clinton has to bring to the table to deal with the nations issues.
