Obama Dials Up Executive Power

Obama Dials Up Executive Power All eyes are on the U.S. Congress, awaiting the clashes that are bound to take place between Obama and a Republican-dominated Congress. Obama has begun to use his executive power to get things done, which some criticize as unhelpful. This article provides a list of key policy issues that are bound to cause drama this year, including energy, labor, health care, and others.

  1. People complain about how the government doesn't actually do anything and how gridlock prevents executives from getting anything done. Well, this is President Obama getting some stuff done before his term ends. I appreciate his will to act, but I lament the fact that it comes hand-in-hand with, basically, "giving up" on the legislative branch. It discomforts me that one executive can unilaterally drive our country's progress. These new actions will likely aggravate Republicans and disencourage bipartisan attitudes. I am not suggesting that there was a better path for President Obama to take, but I wish that there was, and I hope that something changes before this strong executive role becomes the new norm in our political system.

  2. Obama is clearly in legacy mode, struggling to be remembered by anything more than his less-than-stellar Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Even with a stagnant congress, the president still cannot act as monarch in order to achieve what he wants. I sincerely hope the lawsuits and other challenges against Obama for his executive overreach, especially with his recent amnesty issuance, are successful.

  3. I agree with Jaime. Obama is trying to get stuff done by enacting all of these regulations. Although I am a bit upset he has to do so through executive power because he knows he will not be able to go rough congress. That being said, the regulations on energy, education, and labor will all help this nation in the long run. Obama may not be well liked currently by this nation, I think we will look back years from now and see how he had no other choice but to use executive order to try and better this nation.

  4. I think that we have made it clear that Obama has given up on the legislative branch. This act shows the true nature of American Politics of the day. We are so polarized that we cannot pass simple pieces of legislature. That being said, I think it is cowardly for Obama to try to get things done in this method because it only increases polarization. I would hope that citizens of America recognize that the problem is centralized in the polarization and that the presidential elections of 2016 will be a way to change the course we have been following.

  5. I agree with Jamie and Dan. People complain that Obama isn't getting anything done but when he is, people also complain about it. Even though Obama is using executive power and some may be upset about it, I think that when we look back on the decisions that are being made, we will be thankful because it will help our nation as a whole in the future.

  6. Whether or not Obama's future regulations will help the country is clearly a matter of opinion. Judging by all the other regulations his administration has enacted, these new ones will stagnate the economy, cripple businesses, prevent us from becoming energy-independent, and remove individual freedom in order to grow the government's power. By all measures, his domestic record is one of the worst in Presidential history. The entire point of opposition to his lawlessness is that people disagree on the results his actions will produce. Although the common misconception is that the Republicans in Congress are unproductive, they passed over 300 bills that the Democratic-controlled Senate never considered. Since many of those will now be passed by the new Senate majority, Obama has a crystal clear choice between ignoring the principles of our Republic to forward his destructive agenda and trying to work across the aisle to achieve actual progress for the country. His track record indicates he's going to choose the former.

  7. At this point anything Obama does wont please one hundred percent of the population. He cant successfully go through the legislative branch so he is using is executive power. This is sad but just the way it is. In the future these regulations will help us.

  8. In my opinion, Obama needs to work more closely with Congress instead of pushing his values while ignoring the other branches of government. Though there are a few things which Obama is doing that I agree with, I still think that he should consult Congress and take into account the Republican majority's view on these issues. If Obama continues to issue executive orders because he does not agree with Congress, he will only increase further opposition. Obama needs to begin to compromise with the Republicans, and hopefully Congress will be willing to compromise with him.

  9. With the now Republican Congress, it's understandable that Obama is going over the legislative branch's head to get things done. It isn't a very popular decision, but if he didn't exercise some of his executive power, nothing would get done, which is a criticism that he has been facing during his term. While I think that Raman's ideas are great and that cooperation should be the ultimate goal in government, it's idealist in that the Republicans in Congress and Obama have already proven to be adversarial in their strategies to attain goals for the public.

  10. I personally support Obamas use of executive power to actually get something down, but that is because I support this presidents political views. However, if I did not support Obama, I could understand how him using executive power could upset those who do not support. Presidents in the past have exercised executive power to make progress, and I do not object to President Obama's use of it.

  11. Again, I think fighting within the government, and having the president actively working against Congress, is doing our country no favors. I appreciate that our president is passsionate enough about his beliefs that he feels the need to use such force, and honestly I would probably agree with the policies he is trying to push through. However, I wish that our government was more focused on putting positive changes in effect than on fighting between parties. Yes, it seems like President Obama has little choice, and using executive order is the only way he'll get anything done. I just hope it won't lead to more aggression within the government.

  12. I think our government needs to be completely more open minded and willing to compromise because being stubborn and stern on stances gets as nowhere as a nation and doesn't allow for advancement. Ther isn't always one right answer. I think that Obama needs to compromise with congress and congress needs to compromise with Obama so that he doesnt feel the need to veto everything.

  13. Constantly being in the public eye, everything you do is going to get criticized. People complain that nothing is getting done in the government due to gridlock. When Obama uses executive power to actually get things done, people still complain. Because of his public life, someone is always going to have a problem with what he is doing. I think it is good that Obama is trying to accomplish things in office since he knows that he won't be able to get anything through congress.

  14. I believe that if President Obama didn't take the reins and use executive power then nothing would ever get down in this country. Everybody is tired of gridlock, including President Obama, who has told Congress numerous times that if they want things to get done then they need to step up and do it or he will. I support Oresident Obama and I think he is doing what he can with the present situation.
