Voters to decided on new minimum wage
This article discusses he possibility of the minimum wage being raised in multiple states. It's no secret that the Democratic Party is in full support of the minimum wage being raised, but this article reveals the possibility of republicans in Alaska and Arkansas (among others) being in favor of such a change. Should the minimum wage be raised?

I think it is apparent that everyone wants the minimum wage increased and I can't imagine anyone being against that. If it is true that many low-income workers will not benefit because they can still be paid under minimum wage I don't really see the point. In that case it won't make as big of a difference if everyone's minimum wage was increased.
ReplyDeleteThe minimum wage should definitely be raised. Working at a minimum wage job can't even pay the rent, let alone pay bills, buy food, etc. Minimum wage jobs aren't designed for people supporting families, but due to the current job market and economy many parents are forced to work minimum wage jobs to try and make ends meet. Also, basic things like clothes and furniture seem to be becoming more and more expensive. The people need to be cut a break, and raising the minimum wage will help.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Becky that the minimum wage should be raised. Becky is correct in saying that these jobs aren't designed for families, but in reality, more parents are having to work minimum wage jobs. At the same time, though, I can't help but agree with Taryna a little too. If minimum wage is raised, everyone deserves to benefit from it.
ReplyDeleteI am not very knowledgeable on the issue of minimum wage, so I probably do not have a very good grasp on the benefits and costs of a higher minimum wage. Though it is true that some people working minimum wage jobs do not have enough money, I also believe that market forces should not be ignored and that the market should also play a role in setting the minimum wage. However, if most people support an increase in the minimum wage, I think that an increase should be implemented.
ReplyDeleteI agree with everyone above. I think that the minimum wage should be increased. Living cost these days are higher and the minimum wage currently can not support all basic necessities. Many people who are working these jobs have families to take care of so not only are they supporting themselves, they are supporting their kids as well. I don't think that their would be any harm in increasing the minimum wage.
ReplyDeleteI think that minimum wage should be raised. Raising minimum wage will help a lot of impoverished families. That being said, if minimum wage is raised then this will also mean less jobs. Also prices will presumably go up. I am all for raising minimum wage, but like Raman stated, market forces should play a role in setting the minimum wage.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Dan and Raman, the market should help determine minimum wage. The number of people living off of minimum wage is crazy, and it would help many families to be able to provide that much more for their families. As we look for solutions, it is important to keep the sights of not necessarily the economic effects but also the social effects of increased minimum wage.
ReplyDeleteIf the minimum wage was only earned by teens working part time jobs, the low rates would be understandable, but entire families must be supported on these wages. I think it should be increased to better protect Americans from poverty. Implementing higher wages through voting is the only way to convince companies to do so.
ReplyDeleteAs many others have said, I think the minimum wage should be increased. Even if it was just raised by a few dollars, the numbers could add up and greatly assist low income families in the long term. Small changes like that could make a big difference in the poverty issue, and might also help prevent people being forced to work multiple jobs in order to provide for their families.
ReplyDeleteRaising minimum wage would decrease the wage gap and that's why it hasnt happened because policy makers are generally wealthier. I think it would be a wonderful way to address that issue. Increased minimum wage would take low income families above the poverty line. It would also make individuals working minimum wage jobs mor able to provide for their families and their children's education. It will also make less peop,e dependent on government assistance.
ReplyDeleteThe idea of raising minimum wage is all fine and good, however in practice it would make no difference. Wages and the price of goods and services are interconnected; if wages increase, companies will charge more for their products and rent will increase as well. With a national minimum of say $15, all of a sudden the price of a gallon of milk will spike and so on. Also, small pay for small work, minimum wage for minimum skills. These jobs currently paying $7.25 (in PA) are at that rate because they require no skill or education.
ReplyDeleteI hope, for no purpose other than to save the bickering every couple of years, that minimum wage becomes tied to inflation. Besides that, I do not anticipate any rush to change either the federal minimum wage or the Pennsylvania minimum wage considering the GOP majorities in both legislatures.
ReplyDeleteI think it's ridiculous to expect people, especially those with children, to be able to afford their basic needs on minimum wage as it is. Companies paying minimum wage to their employees are usually business with an exorbitant amount of money going to the companies leaders. Giving their workers more money would not devastate the company. I feel that raising minimum wage would severely decrease the negative aspects of our society such as crime, health issues and the poverty cycle.
