Unlikely Cause Unites the Left and the Right: Justice Reform
The coming together of the left and right wings, specifically the Koch Brothers and The Center for American Progress, to reform the justice system in America has stunned many. Do you think this collaboration of the left and the right is a good thing? Do you think this'll be helpful for all of us? Do you think this makes for a hopeful future when it comes to both wings collaborating and working together?

I was extremely happy to see that Koch industries and the Center for American Progress are coming together to reduce our 2.2 million member prison population. With privately owned prisons all over the country profiting from the large numbers of people in jail, it is no wonder that our prison population is so high. We have the highest prison population in the world, and that needs to change. I am pleased by Senator Sheldon's initiative to cut prison populations by reducing the sentence of eligible prisoners. While I agree with cutting down on the prison population, I think sentences should only be reduced for non-violent criminals.
ReplyDeleteBut, I think we also need to attack the issue from the other side as well. In the long run, we could reduce prison populations by funneling funds to education programs that keep kids off of the streets etc.
I gave a speech in Oral Comm on prison reform. While I was doing research for the speech, I came to realize just how atrocious are criminal justice system is.
ReplyDeleteI am all for a bipartisan attack on this issue because it needs to be attacked from multiple sides, as Schafer said. This will benefit all of American society.
It's great that Koch Industries and Center for American Progress are coming together for prison reform considering they identify with opposing parties. It shows that opposing parties can work together when they have a common goal and will hopefully lead to more collaboration in the future.
ReplyDeleteOpposing parties can work together. As of recent, a statement like that may seem far off the reservation from being anything close to true. However, this is a glimpse of hope toward more and more collaboration in the future. Additionally, I am glad that there is reform taking place in the criminal justice system.
ReplyDeleteThe criminal justice system is just as inefficient as any other large government bureaucracy. Smaller governments are more succesful because they have less to manage. The more our government grows, the more rules are created, and the more people go to jail. Simple.
ReplyDeleteI think it is a good sign to see such liberal and conservative organizations coming together for a common cause. It just goes to show how terrible our criminal justice system is if both sides can come together to advocate the reform of it. I do really think something needs to be done and I am hopeful that something will be done since it is clear that there is bipartisan support for this issue.
ReplyDeleteThis is a fantastic sign to see both sides of the political spectrum coming together to reform a horribly unjust penal system. I see no reason why there cant be crossover between to groups political ideology and apparently this issue is one that both the Koch brothers and the center for american progress care about.
ReplyDeleteI believe it is a good sign that they are able to cooperate, and even if they ultimately aren't able to compromise, it is still a good sign that they are willing to give it a try. This event could foreshadow many more compromises between people on different ends of the political spectrum if all goes well.
ReplyDeleteThis coming together is a very good sign into the future. I mean compromise and agreement has to start somewhere right? Like Charlie said, this new coming together really shows how weak and terrible our criminal justice system is. I'm happy we are getting compromise in that area.
ReplyDeleteJohn Oliver did a segment on the justice system on his show not long ago, and if John Oliver is shedding light on an issue, it is obviously a big deal, as he gets half an hour each week to review the issues in today's society, so he must choose carefully as to which issues need the most attention. As he always does, Mr. Oliver made me realize how broken the system we have is. I am not at all surprised that this issue is drawing bipartisan support. The fixing of the broken justice system is something that everyone could undoubtedly benefit from, so why shouldn't it receive support from both sides.
ReplyDeleteIt's really wonderful to see when two opposing parties come together in agreement to work together. This makes me have faith in our government and that we can work things out when we want to. Even if they don't agree with one another a compromise is better than nothing.
